Elizabeth Goddard | A Woman’s Search for Answers Leads to a Mystery Hidden in the Alaskan Ice

twitterfacebookbookbubamazonpinterestInstagramgoodreads

1--What is the title of your latest release?

HIDDEN IN THE NIGHT, Missing in Alaska 3

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A woman’s search for answers leads to a mystery hidden in the Alaskan ice. Joining forces with an Alaska State Trooper, she must battle a deadly blizzard, heartless sabotage, and everything the Alaskan winter can throw at her as the search goes on.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Since this is part of the Missing in Alaska series, I knew it would take place in southeast Alaska and I wanted to involve characters from the small fictional town of Shadow Gap. But I also wanted to let my characters (and readers) experience Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. I wanted to explore glaciers and ice caves, which add to all the beauty that’s Alaska, and in this book, I made a point to make sure my characters experienced the aurora borealis (northern lights).

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Yes! I love that Ivy is all about old books and is searching for a lost Jack London manuscript. He wrote my favorite childhood book—The Call of the Wild. So I’d love to pick her brain.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Passionate. Sharp. Unwavering.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Let’s talk about Jack London. I loved his book the Call of the Wild, but I knew nothing really, about Jack London’s life. I had to dig deep into his story, and I learned that though he’d gone to Alaska to find riches during the gold rush, he left the state poor and sick. But he took his experience in Alaska and turned it into gold. His is a rags-to-riches story. He was the first writer to earn a million dollars! He also wrote a thousand words every day and was truly a starving artist until he finally broke out. He serves as a role model and an inspiration to other aspiring writers.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

My first draft is a big sloppy mess. I focus on discovering the story. I don’t usually really know the story until I’ve lived it through the lives of my characters. Then I’m left with a huge mess to clean up in the edits.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Oh, I love food, so that’s a tough one. Right now, I’m into cinnamon rolls. I cannot resist.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I turned the formal dining room into my office because it was closer to the kitchen. Since I cook breakfast lunch and dinner, it just made sense. It was just more convenient. I still have boxes I need to unpack (from moving 4 years ago), and I might declutter, but my desk is piled high again with paper and stuff I need to do within a couple of days. It’s chaos, really.

10--Who is an author you admire?

There are just so many that it’s hard to choose just one person.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Well other than the Bible, I think Francine Rivers’ Redeeming Love is probably the most impactful and memorable book---you just get a good idea of just how much God loves us, which is life-changing.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

For the Missing in Alaska series, my editor emailed me after the pub board meeting to let me know!

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romantic suspense. What else?

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Movies change for me. I really love the Mission Impossible series, and I loved Dead Reckoning. I can’t wait to see Part 2.

15--What is your favorite season?

I love the changes fall brings with it. Mayve that’s because the holidays are around the corner.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I love food so going out to eat is always my first choice.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Enola Holmes on Netflix has been great.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

It’s a toss-up between Italian and Tex-Mex.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I never really have free time—in other words, I have to carve out time for myself and it isn’t free, let’s say. I enjoy hiking with my family and our dog. Getting outside invigorates me. Since I live in Washington state, there’s so much to love about the outdoors.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I’m working on Storm Warning, the first book in a brand-new series called Hidden Bay. It’s set on the Washington Coast.

HIDDEN IN THE NIGHT by Elizabeth Goddard

Missing in Alaska #3

Hidden in the Night

At the behest of her ailing mother, former FBI special agent turned rare-book collector Ivy Elliott arrives in Alaska to secure an unpublished Jack London manuscript kept secreted away for decades. But when she arrives, she learns the manuscript is gone--taken by the granddaughter of the woman who possessed it. Ivy sets off in pursuit, not just to save the manuscript but to save the vulnerable girl, who was previously trafficked and has no idea what she's getting herself into.

Joining forces with Alaska State Trooper Nolan Long, Ivy must battle a blizzard, sabotage, and the worst of an Alaskan winter as the search goes on. But every answer they find only raises more questions--and the danger to their lives and to the missing girl may only be the tip of the iceberg.

Don't miss this breathtaking race for truth set amid the glorious--and deadly--Glacier Bay from USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard.
