Instead of trying to find your perfect match in a dating app, we bring you the “Author-Reader Match" where we introduce you to authors you may fall in love with. It's our great pleasure to present Kevin G. Chapman.

Writes:

I write mystery/suspense/thrillers, always with elements of humor (and often romance), and usually including subtle (and often not so subtle) commentary on social justice issues. My latest, THE OTHER MURDER, is a murder (obviously) mystery featuring two journalists as well as a pair of homicide detectives. Cable-TV producer Hannah Hawthorne scores a scoop the night of Angelica Monroe’s murder in Washington Square Park. She and her network light the flame of a media frenzy as every news outlet latches onto the tragic story of the 19-year-old NYU student who was brutally gunned down on a warm spring evening. It’s a coup for Hannah, who runs with the story, looking for the next angle. Meanwhile, on the other side of the park, an 18-year-old Latino basketball player with a history of gang membership is also gunned down. While the national media pours over Angelica Monroe’s murder, Javier Estrada is ignored, except by Paulo Richardson, a print journalist from a neighborhood newspaper. When Paulo and Hannah team up, they discover that the two cases are related, and that the narrative painted by Hannah and the rest of the broadcast media may be very wrong. Who killed Angelica? Was it the same person who killed Javier? How did it happen, and is the reading and viewing public ready to know all the facts? As Paulo and Hannah discover, sometimes, the most dangerous thing . . . is the truth.

About:

I am a proud baby-boomer. By day, I’m a lawyer for a major media company, but my day job doesn’t get in the way of enjoying life and taking the time to look hard at the world around me. I enjoy playing tournament poker, so I’ve been known to bluff, except about my love of baseball and particularly my New York Mets. I love the outdoors, the wind in my face, and having a good argument. Stand-up comics, drag shows, and the Broadway productions of Wicked, and Six make me smile. And I get an inordinate amount of joy from reading comments from complete strangers who tell me how much they enjoy my books and my characters.

My ideal reader must enjoy a story that makes them think. If you like knowing exactly what’s happening before the characters do, you’re in the wrong place. Other attributes that would make you an ideal audience for The Other Murder (and all my other books) include:

  • An ability to become fully immersed in a story and care deeply about the characters and their problems.
  • Not being squeamish about some realistic language and violence (they are, after all, murder mysteries and thrillers).
  • An ability to consider difficult social issues and complicated relationships along with the page-turning suspense of the plot.
  • A willingness to laugh at yourself as well as at the world.

What to expect if we're compatible:

You will have trouble going to bed at night if you’re not finished reading. Then, you will dream of the story and what might (or might not) have happened. You will become obsessed with trying to figure out the mysteries and what is going to happen to the characters. You will want to read all the books in my Mike Stoneman Thriller series, and you’ll wonder where the relationship between Mike and Michelle is going. Then, at the end of book #5 (Perilous Gambit), you will send me an email to let me know whether you’re ecstatic or disappointed. After reading my stand-alone romantic suspense, Dead Winner, you may tell me that you saw that ending coming . . . but I won’t believe you. Mostly, you’ll want to get your best friend to read my books so you can talk about the stories, because they are intended to not only entertain you, but to make you think.

THE OTHER MURDER by Kevin G. Chapman

The Other Murder

A sizzling mystery about media, murder, and the value of the truth

Sometimes, the most dangerous thing . . . is the truth.
For disgraced cable news producer Hannah Hawthorne, covering the shooting of a pretty NYU sophomore is a chance for redemption. When the story snowballs into a media circus, Hannah’s reporting fans the sensationalistic flames and earns her acclaim. The tragic murder, seemingly the result of random urban gun violence, prompts protests and vigils that further magnify the story.

Meanwhile, Paulo, a reporter for a small online neighborhood newspaper, is following the other murder in Washington Square Park that same night – a Hispanic teen. He discovers an unexpected connection that is political dynamite. When Hannah and Paulo team up, they uncover disturbing facts, leading them to question everything they thought they knew. Their reporting also leads them to the man who might be the killer.
When the story is ready to explode, the truth may be hotter than anyone can handle. Breaking the next scoop could ruin Paulo’s paper and wreck Hannah’s career – and it could get them both killed.

If you like David Baldacci's page-turners, Michael Connelly’s cops, and Sara Paretsky’s quirky characters, you will love The Other Murder.

About Kevin G. Chapman

Kevin G. Chapman

Kevin G. Chapman is, by day, a buttoned-down corporate labor & employment lawyer who works for a major US media company. He frequently speaks at Continuing Legal Education seminars, has taught legal writing to law students, and is the past chairperson of the Labor & Employment division of the global Association of Corporate Counsel. When the work day is done, however, Kevin lives a much more exciting fictional life of crime and romance as the author of the award-winning Mike Stoneman Thriller series (and other novels, short stories, and screenplays). When not busy writing, he enjoys playing tournament poker and cheering on his beloved New York Mets.

Kevin’s latest novel, Dead Winner, is a stand-alone mystery/thriller/romance set in New York City. Now available in paperback and hardcover, the Kindle edition is now on pre-order with a distribution date of November 22, 2022. Kevin also recently published a short story called The Car, the Dog & the Girl, which is a humorous thriller about a wannabe gangster and his misadventure on what should have been a simple job.

The awards are still coming in for Kevin’s five-book Mike Stoneman Thriller series. This crime-thriller series of police procedurals includes the WINNER of the 2021 Kindle Book Award (Book #3, Lethal Voyage) and the WINNER of the CLUE Award for best police procedural of the year (book #4, Fatal Infraction). Find all the Mike Stoneman Thrillers on Amazon.

Kevin has also written several short stories, including Fool Me Twice, the winner of the New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association's 2012 Legal Fiction Writing Competition, which was the genesis of the character Mike Stoneman, the protagonist in Righteous Assassin.  Fool Me Twice is available as a stand-alone short story free on Amazon (and most other ebook retail sites), or you can get it free from Kevin’s website.

Kevin is a resident of Central New Jersey and is a graduate of Columbia College (‘83) and Boston University School of Law (’86). Kevin loves talking fiction with readers or talking law, politics, or baseball.
