1--What is the title of your latest release?

AFTER EVERYONE ELSE

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

With humor and insight AFTER EVERYONE ELSE tells the story of the relationships between Bailey Edgeworth, her passionate husband, and their troubled daughter. After Bailey is charged with the murder of her ex-husband these relationships are tested by the secrets they keep.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I always love to set stories in New York and Atlanta. Especially culinary stories. Both have such robust and exciting choices. With AFTER EVERYONE ELSE, I just had to sneak in my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Absolutely. Being a restaurant designer, she has an in with all the good restaurants and mixologists in town. It would be fun to see restaurants and cocktails from her point of view. She would always get us a good table.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

  1. Creative
  2. Ambitious
  3. Witty

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Because AFTER EVERYONE ELSE is about famous chefs, I have learned to let go and trust chefs in the preparation of their dishes.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Both. If inspiration is right, I will go back in and edit a passage. I always go back to beginning to edit fresh. I am always surprised along the way. I love it when a character surprises me. I figure if they can surprise me, they will surprise the reader too.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Dover sole and warm carrot cake with cream cheese icing. Along with my signature cocktail, a sidecar. But I am a sucker for key lime pie with the Macadamia nut crust.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I am surrounded by windows so I can look out on the world. When I am stuck, I often rediscover my inspiration in nature.

10--Who is an author you admire?

So many. I always love when my friends achieve huge success and remain kind. Some of my friends that fit nicely in this category are Patti Callahan, Kevin Wilson and Lisa Barr. I will treasure my time at Parnassus with Ann Patchett. Parnassus was my very first event and it was very emotional. She came up after the event and was so delightfully kind.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

I can only pick one? It would have to be “Autobiography of a Face” by Lucy Greely. Her Memoir is about how she navigated in the world with her facial disfiguration. It taught me how to navigate my own world with my physical disfiguration. It changed my life.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

It was an email. And it wasn’t what you would expect. I just sat at my desk. Reading and rereading that email. Maybe because I was sixty years old, and I had waited so long for this moment. I just wanted all the feelings to be mine for a little while longer before I accepted. Crazy, Huh?

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

If the book is well written, it doesn’t matter what genre; I will read it. I am NOT a big fan of science fiction or horror.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

It depends on my mood. I can be moved by something as serious as “Schindler’s List” or greatly entertained by an offbeat romance or musical like “Begin Again.”  I love to laugh.

15--What is your favorite season?

Because my favorite color is green, I would have to say spring. I am hopeful by nature and spring is about rebirth and renewal.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With birthday cake! Preferably, all month long and always with friends. Did I mention cake?

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Zibby Owens. I love her enthusiasm and curiosity. And her positivity. It is like a salve in this crazy world.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

French

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I’ll let you know when I have some!

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I would love to do something that is current and rooted in relationships. Or a retelling of a classic tale. I am percolating. Stay tuned.

AFTER EVERYONE ELSE by Leslie Hooton

After Everyone Else

From the acclaimed author of Before Anyone Else comes a captivating new novel about the lengths we will go to protect the ones we love.

Bailey thought she’d gotten her happy ending. She is married to the man she loves, she has started a family, and her design business is flourishing. But when Bailey’s ex-husband, a famous TV chef, is found murdered with her DNA all over his apartment and body, she is suddenly facing murder charges in a high-profile case. Already burdened by the demands and challenges of marriage, motherhood, and her career, Bailey now must do everything she can to prove her innocence. But it’s the ones she thought would surely be on her side—her enigmatic lawyer and her husband—who might be doubting her innocence the most.

Alternating between the past and present, After Everyone Else chronicles the grip of the past, the challenges of forgiveness, and the resilient love we save for the person we love after everyone else.
