Emily E. K. Murdoch | 20 Questions: A GOVERNESS OF WISE YEARS

facebooktwitterbookbub

1--What is the title of your latest release?

I have quite a few! A GOVERNESS OF UNUSUAL EXPERIENCE came out on 14 January, and I currently have five books available on pre-order: A GOVERNESS OF WISE YEARS, comes out on March 29, THE MISSING HUSBAND comes out on April 26, ADVENT WITH AN ARCHDUKE launches May 1, SCANDAL WITH A SOVEREIGN is live on June 1, and I'm involved in an incredible multi-author boxset that will be published on June 7 called SECRETS, SCANDALS, AND SEDUCTION.

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

THE MISSING HUSBAND is the first book in my new de Petras Saga, a multi-generational family saga with romance, mystery, and more! This rambunctious family is determined, rebellious, and packed full of incredible stories.

Readers will meet the matriarch, Opal de Petras, in the first book – and her husband, who appears back in her life just as she has given him up for dead and decided to take a lover. Shenanigans ensue!

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I have always written historical romance; I just love losing myself in the past and exploring characters who are faced with very similar challenges that we face today, but in very different circumstances.

4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely – though I'm not sure that Opal would like me that much, she’s far more direct and confrontational!

5--What are three words that describe your hero?

Bold, opinionated, reckless.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

This is my first family saga, so as you can imagine I have had to do a huge amount more planning of future books in the series than I normally do. Making sure that all the dates work, that the mystery that threads throughout the series is teased enough but at the same time isn’t rushed…it’s been a challenge!

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Absolutely have to get that first draft out before I even think about editing. I find editing very personally challenging, as it feels like days upon days of critiquing myself and everything I’ve tried to do with the book! Editing is necessary, of course, but if I start too early, then I would never finish the book.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Cheese. Every time. I have a really sweet tooth, but if I had to choose between chocolate and cheese, cheese would absolutely win.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

We’ve transformed our box bedroom into what I call "the study", which is essentially a big desk covered in stuff, and bookcases rammed to the top. It’s painted in a gorgeous minty green, and it’s the only place that I write. When I'm in that chair, words are pouring onto the page.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Just one?! Goodness, that’s a hard one! I love my author community who keeps me accountable – Emmanuelle de Maupassant, Sasha Cottman, Merry Farmer – and alongside them, I am still inspired by a meeting I had with Alison Weir right before I started writing. She gave me such confidence to just go for it.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

THE GREATEST KNIGHT by Elizabeth Chadwick. Before that book, I assumed that all historical romance was Regency romance – and don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of it! But it was the first medieval romance I ever read, and I was hooked from that moment onwards.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

My very first book was published by Endeavour Press, which is no longer running. It was special, but I think the call that has meant the most to me was with my editor Violetta Rand at Dragonblade Publishing, the week after my first novel with them was published.

I had pitched a 12 book series to Dragonblade, which was a publishing house I had marked as my author career goal – and rightly so, they said that as a new author to their stable, they couldn’t commit to that. They had never signed a 12 book series with any other! We agreed to a six book series and that contract was signed…and then two days after my first book with them was published, my editor Violetta emailed me to ask for a call.

I was terrified. I was absolutely convinced that they were unhappy with my book, the reviews, something.

I jumped on a call – and Violetta gushed about my book. They loved it! They loved the response it was receiving. They wanted to extend my contract to my suggested 12 books.

It was incredible, and I’ve never looked back. THE MISSING HUSBAND will be my nineteenth novel with Dragonblade!

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Gotta be historical romance – but I also love fantasy, space opera, and non-violent thrillers.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Amelie!

15--What is your favorite season?

Definitely summer. Even though I was born in winter, I hate being cold and I struggle without sunshine and blue skies. Bit a difficulty living in England…

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With the people who really matter to me. And food. Lots of food.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

THE GOOD PLACE made me laugh, cry, and think, which is an incredible balance. LOWER DECKS is the Star Trek meets Rick and Morty the world needs. And who can stop watching BRIDGERTON?

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Erm…all of it? I love Thai, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Indian, and of course British classics.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I read! I love long walks, I love tea/champagne with some of my best people, and I adore my sleep. Seriously. I need at least eight hours a night.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

My DE PETRAS SAGA launches in April 2022, and will be fourteen books, so I’ll be focused on that for a while – but keep an eye out in July, when I'm revealing something super special!

A GOVERNESS OF WISE YEARS by Emily E. K. Murdoch

Governess Bureau #6

A Governess of Wise Years

The Governess Bureau is about to close – but Miss Vivienne Clarke has one chance to redeem it, and herself.

Scandal. Intrigue. Love matches. The Governess Bureau was never supposed to be full of these things, but over the last few years, no fewer than five matches have been made.

It’s something the proprietress, Miss Vivienne Clarke, simply cannot allow to continue.

With only one client remaining for the previously esteemed Governess Bureau now it has been called into disrepute, Vivienne has no choice but to take on the assignment herself; Caring for the daughter of Edwin, Viscount Bysshe.
It would be so much easier if she had not turned down his offer of marriage fifteen years ago.

Edwin wouldn’t consider himself a man who carries a grudge, he just wants to prove to the world that Miss Clarke is incompetent and her whole Bureau idea is a scam. After all, she chose it over him all those years ago. Besides, he has secrets to hide about his daughter, and her mysterious origins.

All Vivienne wants to do is salvage her reputation, restore her business, and return to London with her heart intact.
She’s a governess of wise years, but is that enough to save herself from even more heartbreak?

This full length novel is a steamy Regency romance with a happily ever after, no cliffhangers, and is part of a series that can be read in any order.
