1--What is the title of your latest release?

WITCH IN RETROGRADE released January 2022.

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

49-year-old Police Detective and witch, Sarah Jane Prentice, navigates life without her husband as she faces a serial killer in her town, a nosy spirit guide, and the loss of her magic.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Originally, I had the book set in Atlanta, but quickly realized its been more than 25 years since I lived there, and cities change so much. Placing it in California, specifically Silicon Valley gave me a great opportunity to share what I’ve learned living here for the past 10 years. I’ve really grown to love the area and setting is a character unto itself, so I’m excited about presenting it that way.

4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely. I like her a lot. Which is important to me as a writer because I intend to spend a lot of time with her in the future.

5--What are three words that describe your hero?

Smart, determined, no nonsense and loving. I know, I know that’s four. LOL

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

That I really love writing about witches and ghosts. It seems obvious since that’s mainly what I’ve written. But when I first started writing about Sarah Jane, I wanted the story to be free of the paranormal elements I usually include in my stories, but Sarah Jane was not having it so finally I’m not going to fight it anymore.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I write about a third of the book and start editing it while I draft the rest of it.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I am not a foodie by any means. I spent most of my adult life in the south and do miss good southern food. Shrimp and grits, perfectly crisp fried chicken, soft fluffy buttermilk biscuits with gravy, hearty baked macaroni and cheese.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I turned our family room, which was not being used for much into my office space during the summer of 2020. I love it now. The energy of it is warm and spacious. It’s a great place to write or read. I have a standing desk and a comfortable ‘napping’ couch that I had recovered. Also, it has plenty of perches and scratchers for my two cats.

10--Who is an author you admire?

There are so many for different reasons. I love Nora Roberts, especially the fantasy novels she’s writing now. Stephen King for his work ethic. Brandon Sanderson. As for Indie writers, I admire the heck out of Pamela Kelley and Elana Johnson. They’re both good storytellers and really generous with their time and marketing knowledge.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Little Women. I was always telling stories to myself and my friends when I was a kid. After reading Little Women (and more about Louisa May Alcott) I started writing those stories down. Jo March made me realize I could write too.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I’m an Indie author so the only call I’ve ever gotten was the call within myself to write and publish my work without a publishing deal. I’ve been doing this since 2015 and have made a very good fulltime living at it. So, a trade deal would have to be very lucrative for me to consider it at this point in my career.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

All the different shades of fantasy and mystery, including (but not limited to) paranormal/ghost suspense, urban fantasy, and high fantasy; and mysteries (Agatha Christie, Ann Cleeves, Tana French).

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Too many to list but I will never say no to watching LOTR, Star Wars (episodes 4,5,6), the latest version of Dune, and any version of Little Women.

15--What is your favorite season?

Autumn

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Nice dinner in Santa Cruz and then a walk along the boardwalk.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

TV show: Ghosts on CBS, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Prime Video, The Witcher on Netflix are all my favs at the moment. Books:

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Southern

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I garden, and I quilt

20--What can readers expect from you next?

More ghosts and witches, family and hopefully a few laughs.
