It’s that time of year when a warm inviting fire beckons us to curl up on the couch with a great romance novel and some hot cocoa. Perhaps this is why I couldn’t resist setting my latest romantic comedy at Christmastime.

COLORADO CHRISTMAS MAGIC brings two high school sweethearts together to debunk a small mountain town’s famous Scrooge Legend. The more these skeptics attempt to prove that Christmas magic doesn’t exist, the more the magic begins to work between the two of them, and they soon experience love, laughter, and holiday cheer, which is what Christmas is all about.

Is it me, or has life become so busy that it’s become more difficult to enjoy the holidays? When you’re answering work emails at midnight two weeks before Christmas, here’s a listicle of my favorite Christmas movies and books that will help to put you in the Christmas spirit.

# 5 The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore. This children’s book, for all ages, sparked my love for writing and Christmas. During the holiday season, my mom used to read this story to my sister and me before we dozed off to sleep. The detailed description of St. Nick and his reindeer is timeless, and has touched the imaginations of us all. As an adult, the poem won’t take any time to read, and it might bring back good memories of your own childhood.

#4 A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Not only do I love the novel, the original movie, and the several movie remakes, but I also played the Ghost of Christmas Past in two Los Angeles theater productions. The story is such a good one that I had to incorporate the idea of transforming a Scrooge through love and the Christmas spirit into COLORADO CHRISTMAS MAGIC.

#3 Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas is another great Christmas classic. Like Scrooge, the Grinch wants to ruin Christmas for everyone because he is unhappy and alone. Inclusivity and love can change a person for the better, which is a great message, especially at Christmas.

#2 Serendipity. I had the pleasure of working on this 2001 romantic comedy, and I think it’s one of the most underrated Christmas movies of all time. It takes place in New York where the city is alive with last-minute shoppers. Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack meet as they reach for the same pair of cashmere gloves. They then embark on a wonderful evening together in a city decked out for Christmas. They ice-skate in Central Park, share a decadent dessert in Serendipity, begin to fall in love. It’s about fate and one’s destiny, and believing that when two people are truly meant to be together, they will be—no matter how much time passes.

#1 It’s a Wonderful Life is my favorite Christmas movie because it has it all—romance, drama, magic, and a little bit of humor with the angel Clarence. It rings true to many of us who have given up on a dream or sacrificed for others. It’s a classic because it makes us realize how many lives one individual touches, and how love for one another truly makes the world a better place—a perfect Christmas message for everyone.

COLORADO CHRISTMAS MAGIC by Caitlin McKenna

Colorado Christmas Magic

A heartwarming romance about what it takes to bring a little holiday spirit to the grinchiest of skeptics—and how one small town with an abundance of Christmas magic can bring two people together.

Bah, humbug.

Christmas is not the most wonderful time of the year for Charley Dawson. After writing a column suggesting readers cancel Christmas, she’s sent on assignment to St. Nicholas, Colorado, home of the Scrooge Legend. The legend says that any “Scrooge” who enters the town will end up loving Christmas as much as Santa does. She’ll go, she’ll prove the myth wrong, she’ll have a fantastic new column. Easy as mincemeat pie.

Detective Jack Brody assumed the Scrooge Legend was just that—a legend. A free stay in the picturesque town seems too good to be true, so he heads to St. Nicholas to investigate. Once there, he finds a winter wonderland, a group of kind but suspiciously closemouthed townspeople…and his high school sweetheart, Charley. He’s more than happy to team up with her, especially when it might mean a second chance with the only woman he’s ever loved.

As Charley and Jack go dashing through the snow to find the truth, they rediscover all the reasons they were a great couple. Of course, in the town of St. Nicholas, Colorado, there are plenty of someone's little helpers to bring people together with comfort and joy when they need it most…

About Caitlin McKenna

Caitlin McKenna

Ever since she can remember, Caitlin McKenna has always loved a good story. Whether it was in the form of a long-winded joke told by her dad around the dinner table, or an outlandish story of alien abduction and missing homework imagined by one of her classmates, she loved to hear every one of them. Naturally, her love of a good story landed her in Hollywood where she embarked on an acting and screenwriting career. While in the theatre, she had the opportunity to play complex characters like Anne Boleyn in Anne of the Thousand Days, and Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, which has helped her tremendously as a writer when flushing out her own characters. Even though Caitlin saw her stories as movies in her head, she felt the need to have more control over them, so she switched her focus from screenplays to novels.

Now she enjoys writing any story where love drives the narrative. Her novels include No Such Luck, My Big Fake Irish Life, Super Natalie, Manifesting Mr. Right, and her dystopian thriller, Logging Off. When not writing, she can be found at one of the major studios working as a voice-over actress and voice-casting director for an upcoming movie or television show. Caitlin lives with her husband and two spoiled dachshunds, and is working on her next novel.
