Jill Marie Landis | The Tale of THE ACCIDENTAL LAWMAN or The Book with the Big Headed Hero.

facebook

Last year Steeple Hill released HOMECOMING, my first western historical with an inspirational theme. The story is set in a fictional Texas frontier town named Glory and I found myself so involved in the characters and the setting that I wrote a second book, THE ACCIDENTAL LAWMAN, set in the same town. The hero and heroine from HOMECOMING make cameo appearances, so readers who missed that book might want to order it as well when shopping for THE ACCIDENTAL LAWMAN. (Okay, enough of the shameless self promotion--for now.)

Though I'm known for the emotion and characterization in my books, there is always a touch of humor that sneaks in, too. In THE ACCIDENTAL LAWMAN, humor comes to play in the opening scene, an accident that propels an unassuming writer with the dream of publishing his own newspaper into the unlikely position of the first sheriff of Glory. Hank Larson has moved to Texas to escape his old life, one that continually reminds him of his late wife. He's spent his entire savings on a printing press to enable his dream and is all set to launch "The Glory Gazette." He'll be editor, writer, and publisher. The problem? There is no newspaper in this one horse town because there's no news-- not until he arrives and heads for the bank.

Just inside the front door, Hank literally runs into Amelia Hawthorne, a young woman who is a healer, an apothecary, and the closest thing to a doctor in Glory. While they are on the floor trying to salvage some precious herbs she's brought for the elderly owner of the bank, a gunman walks in and trips over them. Hank wrestles the man to the ground, the gun goes off, and the rest is history. The well meaning populace swears Hank in on the spot and the writer is soon sporting a badge and trying to carry out a job he wants no part of-- especially since it involves tracking down Amelia's brother.

THE ACCIDENTAL LAWMAN is about finding love again, of promises kept and broken, of heartache, and most of all, forgiveness. As with all of my books, I've aimed to write a page- turner and I'm hoping you'll agree after you've read it.

Now, you might be wondering why I wrote a book about a "big headed" hero. Hank isn't actually conceited. If anything, the man is just the opposite. He's handsome, intelligent, has a sense of humor and is determined to be honorable in a situation that isn't of his own making. He won't take no for an answer once he falls in love with Amelia.

I started calling the book "The Big Headed Hero" after my first glimpse of the cover. I love the look of the heroine. She's perfect. The background with the town of Glory is pretty much the way I see it in my head. Hank is sort of lurking in the foreground, complete with a badge on his vest--but to me his head looks like it was superimposed on his body and it turned out a little ... well..."big." Hopefully you'll get a chuckle out of it...and you'll be holding the book in your hands.

Happily, I'll have another story set in Glory, Texas, on sale in March of 2010. This time from Zondervan books.

But...that's a tale for another day.

Thanks for your support and comments.

Until next time,

Jill Marie

Hi Jill. The Accidental Lawman sounds good. The cover is nice even though the hero is big. :)

Your book cover correlates with the insides. A touch of humor, too - I can't wait to find what he'll trip over next.

I'm glad you're writing more inspirational books, historicals have always been a favorite of mine, novel or romance.
(Sigrun Schulz 7:03pm May 24, 2009)

First a question - do your books come
in large print? We have a large group
of readers at our library who love this
type of story. Many however need
large print. Too often I end up with
the first book in a series in paperback
or regular print then find the later
books in large print. Then I'm in
trouble because they all want to read
the other books in the series.
Sounds like an enjoyable read with a
bit of a sense of humor - both high on
my list of books to get.
(Patricia Barraclough 6:19pm May 25, 2009)

Hi Patricia,
Homecoming is in large print and I believe that The Accidental Lawman should be as well. Thanks for your question,
Jill Marie
