What is the title of your latest release?
BLIND DATE WITH A WEREWOLF
What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
When an old dangerous werewolf is given five blind dates for Christmas, what could possibly go wrong? (Hint—everything does)
How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I’ve been working on parts of this story for years, but when I wrote Winter Lost, I realized that this story dovetailed with that one. So I set it just before and during the events of that book.
Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
I hang out with ‘em all, every day. The protagonist of this book is a particular favorite.
What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Beautiful. Dangerous. Vain (Is it vanity if he’s right?)
What’s something you learned while writing this book?
Dating in the electronic age is full of pitfalls and roses. Also dead bodies, vampires and a lioness.
Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
Yes.
What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Cubano Pizza. It has dill pickles on it—just like the sandwich. But it’s better because it’s pizza!
Describe your writing space/office!
I have two. I have a lovely office that my kids put together for me last Christmas, full of forest servicey vibes. And my kitchen table, full of whatever I haven’t bothered to put away yet. Where I write kind of depends on the day.
Who is an author you admire?
Lois McMaster Bujold. Jim Butcher. John Steinbeck. Elizabeth Peters (and all of her noms de plum), Nora Roberts/JD Robb, T Kingfisher, KJ Charles
Is there a book that changed your life?
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. I read it for the first time when I was in second grade and reread it for years thereafter. When I picked it up again to read to my own children, I was stunned to realize I had large portions of it memorized—and many of the life lessons were things I had unknowingly absorbed. First—horses. That’s a love that has followed me from childhood until now. But also “Pick your feet up well when you trot. Never bite or kick, even in play.” Ignorance does more damage than malice. Compassion is never the wrong answer.
Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
It was a dark and stormy night…seriously though, it was a long time ago and there was very little drama. I sent in the first three chapters and a synopsis (it was a long time ago) to all of the publishers who published fantasy. I got back a lot of “no, thank you” and one—"don’t bother us with anything less than a full manuscript.” So I polished the manuscript to the best of my abilities – and before I sent it to that publisher, I got a letter from Laura Anne Gilman who was then working as an editor at Ace. I sent her the manuscript instead. She wrote back to tell me it needed to be longer and given more description. She was right. I did my best, sent it to her and she bought it. We went out to dinner that night—which was a big deal because we were in college with two small children. We didn’t get out much.
What’s your favorite genre to read?
Good stories are my favorites whatever the genre. But I usually go to fantasy or some other speculative fiction when I go looking for something new to read.
What’s your favorite movie?
My favorite movie no one has heard of is Keeping Mum (2005) starring Kristin Scott Thomas (who currently rocks in Slow Horses), Rowan Atkinson, and the fabulous Maggie Smith with a smattering of Patrick Swayze. Think a British nod to the flavor of Arsenic and Old Lace. My other favorite movie is The Sixth Sense because it is a story telling masterpiece. And, of course LotR.
What is your favorite season?
Spring. Now that I live in Eastern Washington, I actually get three months of spring. (Montana not so much). I love seeing the days get longer and world come to life.
How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Hide in a corner and hope it goes away before anyone notices.
What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Murderbot and Slow Horses—both on Apple, both based on books/novellas.
What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Thai
What do you do when you have free time?
What’s that? I own a horse farm and write books. I am usually doing one or the other. Or reading. But I think reading is just another part of writing.
What can readers expect from you next?
I am currently working on the next Alpha and Omega. As soon as I finish it we will come up with a publication date. After that I plan on writing a novel set in the Mercyverse not centered around Mercy or Anna and Charles. I have owed that one to my publishers for quite a long time. But it sort of depends upon Penguin Random. If they want another Mercy before that book, I can work on it. This book, BLIND DATE WITH A WEREWOLF, was something I needed to write first—and Penguin graciously said “Have at it!”

When the deadly werewolf Asil is gifted five blind dates by some anonymous “friends,” his reclusive life will never be the same, in this enthralling novel in stories from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Mercy Thompson series.
Includes two all-new stories as well as three previously published stories.
Dear Asil:We are worried about you. A werewolf alone is a sad thing, especially at Christmastime. So we have a challenge for you: five dates in three weeks. We have taken the work out of it and connected you with five people from online dating sites. You should also know that we have informed the whole pack and instigated a betting pool. Have fun!
Sincerely,
Your Concerned Friends

Five dates full of mayhem, death, and true love
Patricia Briggs, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Mercy Thompson series, lives in Washington State with her husband, children, and a small herd of horses. She has written 17 novels to date. Briggs began her career writing traditional fantasy novels, the first of which was published by Ace Books in 1993, and shifted gears in 2006 to write urban fantasy. In Fall 2010, Patricia made another foray into traditional fantasy, when Ace published a revised version of her very first book, Masques (2010), and its never-before-published sequel, Wolfsbane (2010), both of which debuted on the New York Times bestsellers list for Mass Market Fiction.
In 2006, Ace Books published Moon Called, the first book in her #1 New York Times bestselling—and signature series—about Mercy Thompson. The non-stop adventure left readers wanting more and word of this exciting new urban fantasy series about a shape-shifting mechanic spread quickly. Blood Bound (2007), the second book in the series, debuted at #12 on the New York Times bestsellers list. After the incredible success of Iron Kissed (2008), which landed at #1 on the New York Times list, the Mercy Thompson saga continued to win the hearts of readers and grew in popularity with the release of each book. Bone Crossed (2009), the fourth book in the series and first to be published in hardcover, debuted at #3 on the New York Times Hardcover bestsellers list, where it stayed for four weeks. The most recent hardcover, Silver Borne (2010), debuted at #1 on the New York Times Hardcover bestsellers list and stayed on the printed list for a total of three weeks!
Briggs also writes the Alpha and Omega series, which are set in the same world as the Mercy Thompson novels. What began as the novella “Alpha and Omega” in an anthology called On the Prowl (2007), was then expanded into a full new series. The subsequent books were Cry Wolf (2008) and Hunting Ground (2009), both New York Times bestsellers. The third book of the Alpha and Omega series is Fair Game (2012) and debuted at #4 on the New York Times bestsellers list.
