1--What is the title of your latest release?
EVERY HOUR UNTIL THEN
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
As a time-crosser, Kathryn Voland lives in 1888 England and pre-World War II Washington, DC. In the 1930s, when she curates a museum exhibit about Jack the Ripper, she discovers that her sister will become his last victim in 1888. Kathryn must race against time to save her, knowing it will cost her everything--including the only man she's ever loved.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
Every Hour Until Then is the 5th book in my Timeless Series. Each book is set in a unique historical time and place, and when I had the idea for the Jack the Ripper plot, I knew it would be set in London in 1888. My heroine lives in both 1888 and 1938, and I knew I needed her to have access to the Jack the Ripper files, so I decided that she would be a visiting curator who would put together an exhibit about the notorious killer. It was fun to set the story in the same city, fifty years apart, and see how much, and how little, had changed.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Yes! Out of all my heroines, Kathryn is the most like me. Even my adult daughter, who read the book, told me that Kathryn reminded her of me. I think we’d get along great!
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Headstrong, confident, and loyal.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned so much about Jack the Ripper! I discovered that he had five victims and that the first four were about the same age (mid-40s), homeless, and all of them had been married. But his last victim was different. She was in her early 20s, had never been married, and lived in a rented room. It worked out well to make her my heroine’s sister.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I do edit as I draft. Each day, I write one chapter. The next day, I reread that chapter, make edits, and then write the next chapter. When I’m done, I go back over the entire manuscript one more time before handing it in to my editor.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Anything with chocolate! My favorite is a big bowl of chocolate brownie ice cream, drizzled with warm peanut butter.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I live on the banks of the Upper Mississippi in central Minnesota. I write in my dining room, which faces the river. We’re up on a hill, so I look out at the treetops from my picture window and often see eagles flying by. It’s my favorite place in the whole world.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Maud Hart Lovelace. She lived in Mankato, Minnesota at the turn of the twentieth century and wrote a series of books inspired by her life (like Little House on the Prairie). I read the series several times, starting when I was young, and they shaped me as a woman and a writer more than any other books.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Without a doubt. Since I was ten, I had wanted to be an author. By the time I was in my early thirties, I was married with four small children, including twin boys. Amazon suggested I might like a book called The Colonel’s Lady, by Laura Frantz. Not only did I love it, but when I closed that book, I asked myself the biggest life-changing question: why wasn’t I writing books that made readers feel the way Laura’s book made me feel? I decided it was time to pursue my dream—and here I am, thirteen years later with 44 books in print!
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
Every Hour Until Then is my 44th published book. My first published book was a novella in a collection with other authors in 2015. I had been working toward publication for a couple of years by that point and had submitted and been rejected a few times already. I did have an agent, though, and she submitted my idea to a publisher for the novella collection. I happened to have three author friends visiting from out of state when I got the call from my agent that my story idea was selected! It was the perfect timing. We went out to my favorite Italian restaurant to celebrate.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Historical romance.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
I answer this question by asking myself, what movie do I want to watch when I’m sick? And the answer is the Andy Hardy series starring Mickey Rooney. They were produced in the 1930s and are the most iconic Americana films I’ve ever seen.
15--What is your favorite season?
I love summer, especially in Minnesota, on the banks of the Mississippi River.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
As I write this, it is my birthday! I love being with my friends and family. We often have everyone over for a campfire next to the river, and it’s usually the first of many for the season.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I have really enjoyed Love on the Spectrum! Not only have I learned so much, but I have laughed, cried, and been so encouraged. It’s a fabulous, feel-good show that I binged in two sittings with my eighteen-year-old daughter.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Italian
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I love visiting historic sites and museums.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
The sixth book in my Timeless Series will be released in November 2025. It’s the first male time crossing POV character and I can’t wait to introduce him to my readers. The story is set in 1563 in the Elizabethan court at Windsor Castle, and 1883 in the opulent Gilded Age Newport, RI.
