Lisa Marie Rice | A former navy SEAL finds himself in love with an artist

goodreadstwitterfacebook

1--What is the title of your latest release?

MIDNIGHT VENGEANCE

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A rough and tough, hard-bodies and hard-hearted former navy SEAL is absolutely astonished to find himself in love with an artist. Who would have thought?

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Midnight Vengeance is part of an ongoing series, the Midnight series, set in Portland, Oregon, where the security company the men (and for the moment, one woman) works. Everyone loves living there.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Oh, I’d love to hang out with Lauren Dare, born Anne Lowell. She is on the run and super-stressed, but she is also a lot of fun, a very gifted artist, and a woman who believes strongly in friendship. She is a delight.

Since I’m here, I might as well talk about Jacko, her love interest, the hero of the book. Jacko is harder to like. He’s a hard man in every sense of the word. Had a hard life growing up and becoming a SEAL sure didn’t soften him up. He’s a roughneck, and wouldn’t have anything in common with someone like me. BUT…though he’d deny it strenuously, Lauren is softening him up. He is discovering, to his vast astonishment, that he likes – actually likes – art and classical music. Also, well Jacko is a straight shooter and if he is your friend, will have your back forever. And he means what he says and says what he means. That’s pretty attractive in this day and age, right?

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Loyal, smart, nice. She is a really good friend (as Felicity, the heroine of the next book, MIDNIGHT PROMISES, discovers). You’d want her in your life.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I actually learned a lot about nuclear bombs, believe it or not. And certain aspects of the Cold War.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit loosely as I go along. I tend to skip over love scenes until I get to the end, because each love scene must reveal something of the hero and heroine to each other and must cement the relationship as we go along. Each scene must be different and deeper.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Truffles! Ohmygod, Truffles! Including the chocolate kind. Yum.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I am so lucky to have a very pretty office, which is a good thing since I spend so much time here. I live in a pretty town in southern Italy. Our apartment is high up and I have a huge terrace surrounding the house with a spectacular view from the terrace over beautiful fields, with the Lucanian Alps in the distance. On a sunny day, if the air is clear, I can see a bright blue line on the horizon and that is the Ionian Sea. Hidden behind some hills is a Greek Temple where Pythagorus taught. In my study I have artworks mainly inherited from my family on the walls and a ton of books. But the books do not date beyond 2012, more or less, which is when I absolutely switched to ebooks. Good thing, too. I’d never have room. My iPad has over 4000 books. I work as a desk that is gorgeous, albeit a little uncomfortable since it is a Tuscan refectory table.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Nora Roberts and Stephen King. Both have provided me with countless hours of pleasure. Nobody really notices that both have a very strong moral core, mainly hidden because they are such good storytellers. But they always have a moral.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

I lived across the street from the county library when I was a kid and books helped me then and all through my life. When I felt a little out of step or a little hemmed in, science fiction books and stories helped my world expand—to the stars! As a young single professional, chicklit helped me navigate the shoals of dating. And now that I’m older I read a lot of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic literature which makes me feel slightly better—things aren’t THAT bad.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I used to be a simultaneous interpreter, and I worked in Brussels, Belgium a lot. I’d been writing for 8 years, writing, rewriting, submitting, resubmitting. Someone told me Kensington had opened a new romance line, and I submitted a book to them, and more or less forgot about it. Then I got a call in my hotel room in Brussels and didn’t understand – until I did. The editor of Precious Gems wanting to buy my book!! She said she loved it and did I by any chance have any other books? Why yes. Yes, I did. Five of them. Kensington bought them all and that is how five books of mine were published in the first year.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Actually, thrillers. Technothrillers. And romance. When the two genres are married, I am in book heaven, though it’s rare.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

I have rather schlocky tastes in movies, and am left unmoved by intellectual, slow movies. I like fast thrillers. Loved Die Hard. It’s extremely difficult to say which is my favorite movie. I am quite shallow that way. My favorite movie tends to be the last good movie I saw. I love the Jurassic Park franchise, the Alien franchise, even some of the Mission Impossible movies.

15--What is your favorite season?

Definitely the fall. A little cooler but still warm enough to spend the day outdoors. Outdoors for me means sitting in an outdoor café with friends, not hiking, but still. I think it connects to the fact that I always loved school, and fall was when school started.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I usually just celebrate the milestones, but I often throw a party at a nice restaurant. My husband will write a commemorative poem. Life is hard; we need to celebrate the good moments.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I am currently obsessed with Taylor Sheridan’s writing. Loved Sicario and Day of the Soldado. Loved the Lioness seasons. Currently feverishly watching 1923, part of the Yellowstone world. Watched all the modern Yellowstone episodes, all of 1883 and now waiting for 1923 episodes to drop. His dialogue is amazing. And he is unafraid of going to hard places.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian. Of course.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I spent my entire life scrambling. I held 3 jobs paying my way through school. I worked really hard at a hard profession that required travel. Now my life has slowed considerably, and I LOVE IT. When I have some free time, I will sit out on my terrace and soak up the sun, like a cat, thinking of nothing at all. And I read and watch a lot of TV. More than anything else, I try very hard to disengage the anxiety gear in my head and let myself just … be.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I am currently writing the next book in the Black Inc. series. Nikolai. The one after that will be Dylan. Happy reading!

MIDNIGHT PROMISES by Lisa Marie Rice

Midnight #5

In their race for the truth, love must prove more powerful than America’s worst enemy…

When a gorgeous, bleeding woman on the run falls into the arms of Sean “Metal” O’Brien, the former SEAL medic knows just what he can do. Heal her. Tend to her. Keep her safe.

What he can’t seem to do is keep his guard up. Something about the haunted, hunted beauty knocks down all his defenses.

Felicity Ward is no stranger to secrets. Raised in the Witness Protection Program, her whole childhood was a lie. But she couldn’t have known that her family’s secrets—secrets she didn’t even know she was keeping—could spark a nuclear war.

And nothing could have prepared her for the tough, sexy warrior who first saves her life and then vows to protect it, no matter what.

If you love smart women, strong men, and thrilling romantic suspense, read all of Lisa Marie Rice's Best-selling Romantic Suspense series: The Men of Midnight!
