1--What is the title of your latest release?
THE PLOT TWIST
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
When romcom author Allie Edwards crosses paths with bestselling crime novelist – aka publishing dinosaur – Martin Clark at a party, they discover they both have crippling writer’s block, overdue manuscripts and precisely zero words to show to their respective editors.
With deadlines looming, Allie and Martin decide to switch plots and tell each other’s stories. In the writing process, Allie not only gains a father-figure in Martin, but also meets gorgeous events caterer Will, the answer to the leading man-shaped hole in her life and her lack of spicy material.
Caught between love and her career, what could possibly go wrong?
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
Although I now live in the US, I’m a Londoner at heart. I manage my homesickness by setting my books there, because then in my head I can walk the streets with my characters!
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Yes definitely! I love Allie. But I also think it would be fun to meet grumpy Martin and tease him a little bit too.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Allie - funny, smart, great at choosing friends
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
That sometimes a book takes over and you have to let the characters do their thing. When I set out to write this there was less of a twist in the tale, but then Allie met Will and I had to let them get on with it!
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
A bit of both. I tend to reread what I wrote the previous day and do a bit of tweaking. But then I’ll do a much bigger edit once I’ve got a first draft down.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Dairy Milk chocolate. I love so much about America, but I cannot get onboard with the chocolate. So when I go home, or when someone comes to visit me, the thing I always ask for is Dairy Milk!
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I write at a desk overlooking our driveway. I could sit at the back of the house and have gorgeous views of the woods we live in. But I’m inherently nosy and I like to see who is coming and going at all times!
10--Who is an author you admire?
Gah! Too many to list. I have been really lucky to have worked with amazing authors during my career in publishing. And to now be on the other side and to have authors read and rate my own books…it’s an amazing feeling.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
As a kid I loved reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books. When I grew up, I got to work on the publishing side as the films were being released. It was an incredible experience to be that close to words that I had literally grown up with.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I was standing in the checkout line at Target when I looked at my phone and saw an email from my agent saying HarperCollins wanted a meeting. I was so excited as I presumed it meant they were interested in acquiring my book. But then of course I overthought everything and by the time of the actual meeting I had persuaded myself that they wanted to tell me face to face that they hated my writing!
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
I love reading across all different genres but truly, my favourites are rom coms. I think they’re so clever and smart and I think people underestimate how hard it is to write a truly good one. I’m always in awe of my fellow authors.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
The Devil Wears Prada is my comfort movie. If I’m sick or tired, or just need something I know will make me feel better, this is the one I always go to.
15--What is your favorite season?
When we lived in London I’d have said Spring. Because I love the first sight of daffodils and the sun coming out after months of grey London skies. But I think maybe in the US I love Autumn (sorry Fall!) more. I love how Americans celebrate Halloween and then it’s Thanksgiving and before you know it, it’s Christmas which I also love. So I’ve basically said I like all the seasons haven’t I (except Summer, which also has its moments!)
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Cake and champagne. Is there another way?
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I am obsessed with White Lotus, I came to it late and have binged every episode in just a few weeks.
I listen to almost as many podcasts as I read books. One of my favorites is The Rest is Entertainment. Listening to the presenters always makes me laugh and they’re so good at giving me little nuggets of fascinating information every episode.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I have an unhealthy relationship with Pad Thai.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I wish I could tell you I love skydiving or something equally adrenaline filled. But really, I love to read & spend time with my friends and family. I love swimming and basketball, doing the former and watching the latter.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
I’m working on a new rom com, which is, of course set in London. This one is friends-to-enemies-to-lovers, with a ginger cat and a hot musician thrown in to the mix. It’s all about the power of music and how home isn’t always a place, sometimes it’s a song, and sometimes it’s a person. And sometimes it’s a person singing a particular song.
