Hi, my name is Jamie Adams, and I love writing (and reading!) mystery novels. There is just something so captivating about the intricate puzzles, the chase for clues, and the shocking twists that keep readers guessing until the very end. Whether it’s unraveling a cold case, solving a cozy whodunit, or diving into a fast-paced thriller, mysteries have always held a special place in my heart. There’s something uniquely rewarding about that “a-ha” moment when all the pieces of the story finally click together.
For this first post, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite mystery tropes and elements that make the genre so irresistible to me:
The amateur sleuth. There’s something undeniably charming about an ordinary person thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Maybe it’s a baker who stumbles across a body in her small-town shop, or a librarian who finds an old diary that unravels a decades-old crime. These amateur sleuths bring creativity and heart to their investigations, making the journey as entertaining as the solution.
Small towns with big secrets. I adore the contrast of idyllic settings hiding dark truths. A sleepy coastal town, a picturesque mountain village, or a quiet countryside estate—they all have one thing in common: everyone knows everyone, and no one’s secrets are as safe as they think.
The detective with a past. Whether they’re a professional investigator or a reluctant hero, I’m drawn to characters with complex backstories. Perhaps they’ve experienced loss, made mistakes, or are seeking redemption. Their struggles add depth to their pursuit of justice.
The “red herring.” Oh, the art of misdirection! There’s nothing quite like thinking you’ve figured it all out, only to have the rug pulled out from under you. A well-placed red herring keeps me flipping pages late into the night.
Partnerships with sparks. Whether it’s a detective duo or an unlikely pair of allies, I love the dynamic tension of two characters who are learning to trust each other while solving a case. And if there’s a little romantic tension along the way? Even better!
These are just a few of the elements that draw me to mysteries. What about you? Do you have favorite mystery tropes or storylines that keep you turning pages? Are there any must-read mysteries that have stayed with you long after the final chapter?
Two of my favorite amateur sleuth stories:
The Bookstore Mystery Series by Sue Minix.
Sue creates characters you can’t help but love, and her well-written stories will keep you turning pages late into the night. Each book in the series has been a delight, and I highly recommend them to fans of cozy mysteries.
I recently read A Texas Flower Farmer Cozy Mystery series (2 books) by Jackie Layton. Jackie is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors, known for her clean, engaging stories that draw readers in from the very first page. Her books are not only gripping but also memorable, leaving a lasting impression long after the final chapter.
Jamie L. Adams fell in love with books at an early age. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott opened her imagination and sparked a dream to be a writer. She wrote her first book as a school project in 6th grade. Living in the Ozarks with her husband, twin daughters, and a herd of cats, she spends most of her free writing, reading, or learning more about the craft near to her heart.
