1--What is the title of your latest release?
WE ARE WATCHING
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Have you ever had the feeling that the whole world is out to get you? Well, maybe it is… A normal family is thrown into turmoil when they’re targeted by a violent group of conspiracy theorists.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I live in the Hudson Valley, and I’ve always found it a rich setting for books. I set this one in a fictional Hudson Valley town that is so small, everyone knows each other… or do they?
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Sure. She could definitely use a friend!
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Loving, haunted, stronger than she knows (okay, that’s more than one word.)
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
You can make the most outlandish idea plausible if create characters that feel real.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
In the beginning, I do a lot of rewriting, but after I hit the halfway point, I find it easier to just write through to the end and prepare for a big revision.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
anything involving caviar.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I have a laptop, so I can write anywhere. I do have a fairly simply home office, but I’ve also been known to write in libraries, in bed or on trains.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Patricia Highsmith. Strangers on a Train is as perfect a book as I’ve ever read.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
I’d have to say The Outsiders, which I read in 6th grade. I felt as though I knew all the characters and it made me want to be a writer myself – especially when I learned that the author, SE Hinton, was only 16.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
It was 2005. My agent, Deborah Schneider, called me and let me know that not only had my book Hide Your Eyes had found a publisher, but I’d gotten a two-book deal. I was thrilled and shocked, as I’d been through a lot of rejection prior to that. I can’t believe it was 20 years ago! Deborah is still my agent today.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
I love most all genres, but my favorites are probably crime fiction, true crime, literary fiction and memoir.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Boogie Nights.
15--What is your favorite season?
Fall.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I’m not as thrilled by birthdays as I used to be, but a nice dinner with family and friends is always fun.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
The Note by Alafair Burke, which came out January 7. Super-clever and addictive. Wonderfully written.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Japanese.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
What is free time?
20--What can readers expect from you next?
I’m currently at work on Booked, my third entry into Robert B. Parker’s Sunny Randall series. It will be out later this year.
Compelling Crime Fiction with Dark Secrets and Shocking Twists, Perfect for Winter 2025, Unravel the Truth
From USA Today bestselling and Edgar and Shamus Award–winning author Alison Gaylin comes a slick, riveting, and all-too-plausible tale of psychological suspense where a mother is desperate to protect her family as they become targets of a group of violent conspiracy theorists.
Sometimes the world is out to get you.
Meg Russo was behind the wheel when it happened. She and her husband Justin were driving their daughter Lily to Ithaca College, the family celebrating the eighteen-year-old music prodigy’s future. Then a car swerved up beside them, the young men inside it behaving bizarrely—and Meg lost control of her own vehicle. The family road trip turned into a tragedy. Justin didn’t survive the accident.
Four months later, Meg works to distract herself from her grief and guilt, reopening her small local bookstore. But soon after she returns to work, bizarre messages and visitors begin to arrive, with strangers threatening Meg and Lily in increasingly terrifying ways. They are obsessed with a young adult novel titled The Prophesy, which was published thirty years earlier. An online group of believers are convinced that it heralds the apocalypse, and social media posts link the book—and Meg’s reclusive musician father—to Satanism. These conspiracy theorists vow to seek revenge on The Prophesy’s author...Meg.
As the threats turn violent, Meg begins to suspect that Justin’s death may not have been an accident. To find answers and save her daughter, her father, and herself, Meg must get to the root of these dangerous lies—and find a way to face the believers head-on … before it’s too late.
