1--What is the title of your latest release?
Inferno’s Heir
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
A scorned princess infiltrates the rebellion to betray them and win her freedom.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I’ve always loved the elemental aspect of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Right off the bat, I knew I wanted to create a world where each of the kingdoms could control a different element.
Specifically, Inferno’s Heir takes place in Erisia, a country where the royal bloodline can control fire. I also drew inspiration from Victorian England and 18th century France when crafting the world outside of its nonmagical elements.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Yes, although I’m sure she would be deeply unamused.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Cunning, devious, spiteful
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
Heists are much harder to write than I initially expected.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I’ve been trying to edit when I’m completely done, but there are moments when I inevitably begin revising when I’m only halfway through the draft.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Cheetos!
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I typically write in my bedroom! My desk is always cluttered with trinkets (no matter how often I try to keep it tidy), but it’s my personal haven and I love it.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Leigh Bardugo
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Six of Crows
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I was at home with my family when I got the text from my agent (on a weekend!). I cried – a lot. This book had been such a long journey and received so many rejections, to the point where I wasn’t sure if it was ever going to be published. Seeing it out in the world with early readers has been the honor of my life.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
YA fantasy
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Watching the first Avengers movie altered my brain chemistry, so I’ll have to say that.
15--What is your favorite season?
Fall, always
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Waking up late, puttering around my apartment, reading a book, seeing my friends / family – and then getting hotpot to end the day!
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I’m obsessed with Selling Sunset.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Do fries count as a cuisine?
19--What do you do when you have free time?
Lay on my couch, picnic outside, try to get some writing done!
20--What can readers expect from you next?
Plenty more betrayal, twists, and characters in desperate need of a hug.
Teia Carthan abandoned her morals long ago, and now there’s nothing she won’t do to stay alive.
