Book Title: YOU’LL NEVER FIND ME

Character Name: Margo Angelhart

How would you describe your family or your childhood?

I was born into a huge Irish-Mexican family in Phoenix, Arizona and would have it no other way. I’m the middle child in a family of five with both an older and younger brother and sister. My dad is an only child, but my mom is the oldest of seven. My dad is a doctor and worked at the VA Hospital and he always wanted to help people and save lives; and my mom is a lawyer and also wants to help people—first as a prosecutor, now in private practice. I’m close to all my siblings – Jack, who used to be a cop. Tess, who is engaged to be married but won’t set the date. Nico, a forensic scientist for the crime lab. And Lulu – I mean, Luisa (she hates when we call her Lulu in public) who is the smartest of all of us. She’s now in college, after a six-year stint in the Marines. We had a lot of freedom growing up and a lot of responsibilities. And a lot of cousins.

What was your greatest talent?

That depends on what you consider a talent. I would say my ability to wade through lies to find the truth, but I don’t know if that’s a talent so much as an understanding of people and what makes them tick. In school, my talent was definitely sports. I played volleyball in the fall, soccer in the winter, and softball in the spring. The only reason I had passing grades was because of the GPA requirement to play.

Significant other?

I fell in love once. He didn’t love me back. I moved on. Then, I fell for Rick Devlin, but was more cautious this time. He loves me, but not enough. Not enough to let me be a mom to his daughter, Sam. So we’re in limbo and I don’t really know if it’ll work out. I won’t settle, even if that means I’ll be single for the rest of my life.

Biggest challenge in relationships?

Where to start? For me, I’m open, honest, straight-forward. I don’t play games. What you see is what you get. Some men find me (and my family) intimidating, and some men think I’m a challenge to be conquered. I’m neither.

Where do you live?

Sunnyslope, a neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona, less than two miles from where I grew up. I love my little house that backs up to the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, even though it still needs a lot of work.

Do you have any enemies?

Probably. I’m a Private Investigator, and not everyone likes when I find the truth. But I don’t worry so much about that.

How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?

I’m in a mostly good place. I love my house, I’m close to my family, I have a great career. I’m not completely happy, though. My dad is in prison for a murder he confessed to, but I know he’s innocent of. He’s been there for three years, and I would do anything to prove his innocence – and I don’t know why my mom won’t help me.

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?

Neither. I almost had a stepdaughter, but that’s another story.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a private investigator.

Greatest disappointment?

That my mom and siblings accepted my father’s confession without fighting back.

Greatest source of joy?

My family. Not just my immediate family, but my Pop and Abuela, my aunts and uncles, my dozens of cousins.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?

I’m still very competitive so like to play sports more than watch them, though a day at the ballpark is always fun. I’m not a big drinker, but a good microbrewery is my favorite place to unwind. I have an extensive gun collection and enjoy going to the range and especially love friendly competitions with my brother and friends. Fun is usually centered around holidays and family events. There’s something going on every month – or even more often.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?

I find it hard to forgive, and harder to forget. I’m working on it.

What keeps you awake at night?

My dad being in prison. He seems to be doing okay, but he shouldn’t be there. There are some things that happened during my time in the Army that continue to bug me, because I can’t stand injustice.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?

Figuring out why my client lied to me about her husband. I don’t think he’s cheating on her, but she’s positive.  And I lied to my mom about something, and she knows I lied, and she knows I know she knows I lied. So I’m avoiding her – which is increasingly hard to do. She doesn’t approve of me looking for answers in my dad’s conviction, but there’s nothing she can do to stop me.

Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?

Clearly, the most important thing I want is to get my dad out of prison. I need him, my family needs him. I visit weekly, but that’s not the same.

Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?

Honestly, I don’t know. My dad is the biggest obstacle. Why would he confess to a crime he didn’t commit? And - if he is guilty - why?

Angelhart Investigations

You'll Never Find Me

Nothing brings family together like crime.

Working alone as a private investigator is tough. Estranged from her PI family, Margo Angelhart does what she must to get by—including taking on sordid cases that pay the bills, even if she’d rather be helping those the justice system has failed.

That is, until a cheating husband case she’s working intersects with her siblings’ corporate espionage investigation, forcing Margo to cooperate with the Angelhart firm. Now, as the siblings compare notes, it’s clear they need to work together before a white-collar crime escalates to murder.

With far more questions than answers and a key suspect on the run, they’ll need the whole family to pitch in. But as they investigate the ever-twisting mystery, Margo isn’t sharing everything. Can she learn to trust her family and heal their once-close relationship before her secrets put those she loves most in danger?
