1--What is the title of your latest release?

THE CAFE AT BEACH END

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A woman who has lost everything escapes to Cape Sanctuary, the one place she always found peace as a child, though that means she must confront her cousin, who despises her with good reason.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

This is the final book in my Cape Sanctuary series set on the northern California coast, where each book is only connected by geography. I knew I wanted to write one more book here, a fictional place based on two of my favorite beach towns, Cannon Beach, OR and Pacific Grove/Carmel, California.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Yes, though I expect it would take time for us to become friends. Meredith doesn’t make friends easily!

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Defeated, desperate, resilient

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I heavily researched forensic accounting and developed a great appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that goes into solving many financial crimes.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I wait until I’m done writing my first very raw, rough draft. I then spend a great deal of time editing and refining the story it in the second draft, then do a final polish draft (and sometimes one more if necessary).

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Wood-fired pizza. We just returned from Italy on a life-list trip we took mainly for the pizza. LOL. My husband is a little obsessed with making his own so for a “big” birthday this year, we took our family to Italy and visited Pepe in Grani, a restaurant outside Naples that many chefs say makes the best pizza in the world. It was worth all the hype!

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I am extremely fortunate to have an office outside my home. Years ago we purchased the small, dilapidated house next door to us with the intention of fixing it up and using it as a rental property. After we were done with all the work, we decided we really didn’t want to be landlords. At the same time, I had been looking for a place away from the chaos at home to work. This is perfect for my needs and I love that I can walk through my backyard to a quiet, restful haven that’s all mine!

10--Who is an author you admire?

Debbie Macomber. I love how she connects so wonderfully with her readers and has provided them with beautiful stories for decades.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Not specifically one title but I would say all the hundreds of romance novels I read in my teens and young adulthood! I loved every one! A love of reading led to a love of writing and I graduated from college with a degree in journalism, going on to work at a daily newspaper. Eventually I decided I should try to write a book myself, something I never would have even considered if I hadn’t been so obsessed with happily-ever-afters!

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I started my first book after our daughter was born 33 years ago in 1990 but it took me five years of rejections, revisions and querying multiple publishers before I finally sold my first two books in 1995. I was the news editor at the time for a daily afternoon paper with a noon press run so I was usually home by about 1:30 p.m. That afternoon I was home with my daughter, who had two friends over to play. All three of the five year olds were running around the house chasing our dog when the phone rang. It was an editor at Bantam Loveswept whom I had been working with for about a year, submitting and revising and resubmitting. I almost thought it was a prank call when she made the offer to publish those first two books I had written. It was such an amazing feeling! I have felt so lucky every day since then to be able to do what I love.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

I love historicals, especially Regency. I like to listen to suspense and cozy mysteries though.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Pride & Prejudice, the Kiera Knightly version (I know. Heresy to all those Colin Firth fans!).

15--What is your favorite season?

Spring. Winters are hard here in northern Utah and I’m always so ready to be done with it by March!

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I’m usually pretty low-key about my birthdays. This year we hung out with friends and played board games and ate street tacos and it was perfect!

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I listen to a LOT of true crime podcasts. My favorite is A DATE WITH DATELINE. Two friends rehash each Dateline episode and add their hilarious commentary. They’ve been on the air for several years and I listen to them whenever I need a lift.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian, but that’s easy to say when I just spent a week visiting Rome, Naples and the Amalfi Coast!

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I love to read, bead, walk my dog and hang out with my family. Not necessarily in that order.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I have a Christmas book coming in my all-new Shelter Springs series. CHRISTMAS AT THE SHELTER INN will hit bookstores October 10. I just finished a Special Edition category romance in my Women of Brambleberry House series that will come out as part of Harlequin’s 75th anniversary celebration next year and I’m starting work on a trade paperback for summer 2024.

THE CAFE AT BEACH END by RaeAnne Thayne

Cape Sanctuary #5

The Cafe at Beach End

A Summer Beach Read

For fans of Debbie Macomber and Susan Wiggs, an emotional story of starting over and reclaiming happiness.

When Meredith Collins was a child, the little beach town of Cape Sanctuary lived up to its name. Spending summers there with her grandmother, Meredith finally felt safe and loved.

Now she’s returning in disgrace. Her late ex-husband swindled investors out of millions of dollars and made Meredith a figure of scorn—though she knew nothing about his scheme. But she still has the beach cottage she inherited from her grandmother and half ownership of the local café. It’s a place to work and earn a little money. That’s if her cousin, Tori, will let her through the door. Once, Tori and Meredith were as close as sisters—until Meredith chose her neglectful parents’ expectations over their bond. Now widowed with a teenage daughter, Tori isn’t setting out a welcome mat for the woman who let her down so badly.

While Meredith tries to make a fresh start, she is drawn to a mysterious writer renting the cottage next door. Liam Byrne’s kindness is a balm, though she worries he might not be so friendly if he knew who she was. But Liam has his own secret and a mission that will help Meredith confront her past—and maybe, claim a surprising future…

About RaeAnne Thayne

RaeAnne Thayne

Stories of Hope, Healing, & Heart

RaeAnne Thayne will do anything to tell a story. In 15 years as a newspaper reporter and editor, she rode along with a motorcycle gang, took a trip in a hot air balloon and even gave a hunky country music star her home phone number (it was for an interview -- honest!).

When she wasn't working as a journalist, though, RaeAnne worked on her real love -- writing romance novels. She dreamed of publishing a book long before she ever thought it was possible. In fact, college friends used to spend hours when they should have been studying, trying to help her come up with a good pseudonym (none of which she actually ended up using, since she writes under her own name!).

After graduating from college, she took a job as a reporter at a daily newspaper, then moved to news editor. It wasn't until she was home on maternity leave after the birth of her first child in 1990 that RaeAnne seriously tried her hand at fiction writing. She sold her first book in 1995 and quit her editor job two years later to write full-time.

She is a two-time recipient of the Heart of Romance Reader's Choice award and has been a finalist for the RITA and for the National Reader's Choice award.
