1--What is the title of your latest release?

PLAY FOR ME

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

It’s basically the show New Girl mixed with Evvie Drake Starts Over. A sunny sporty former Red Sox athletic trainer ends up working at an arts-focused New England boarding school and living with three guys in a faculty apartment, including a grumpy music teacher who she vows to win over. When she promises to help him play again, sparks fly, and he goes from wanting her gone to wanting her heart.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I knew I wanted to set it at a boarding school in New England – New Hampshire was the logical choice for me since I was a day student at a boarding school there from grades 10-12.

4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely. I’d 100% go for chicken finger grinders, a Red Sox game, or a snowball fight with Sophie.

5--What are three words that describe your hero?

Broody, sarcastic, secretly sweet

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned I’ve been throwing a baseball wrong my entire life.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit while I draft, and then do a full pass once I’m done.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Anything with cherries and chocolate

9--Describe your writing space/office!

It’s probably not very exciting, but since I spend so much time at my day job in my home office, I like to write on the living room couch or in a coffee shop.

10--Who is an author you admire?

There’s so many to choose from. Lynn Painter for her brilliant hilarity, Talia Hibbert for her perfect flirtation and spice, and Katherine Center for ability to balance humor, warmth, and hard things.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Say Goodnight Gracie by Julie Reece Deaver. I read it when I was young, and it is still the saddest book I’ve ever read. It was the first book that rocked me to my core and made me understand the power of books to make people feel.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

This is my third book, so there wasn’t a call as much as emails about options being picked up. But when I found out that my debut, Meet Me in Paradise, was going to be published, I had basically resigned myself to the notion that this author thing wasn’t going to happen and had just started a new job. I saw that New York area code on my phone – my agent calling to say that an editor wanted to talk to me – and freaked out.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Of course, I love romance, but I also really like mysteries, including cozies. These days anything propulsive that makes me curious or makes me laugh or cry is what I gravitate toward.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Wimbledon – so underrated.

15--What is your favorite season?

Spring

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Hanging out with my family, doing something silly like playing badminton badly and watching fireflies

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murders by Jesse Q Sutanto is fantastic.  I also recently enjoyed The Diplomat on Netflix.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Chinese food

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Daydream, spend time with my family, and (hangs head) binge-watch Chinese dramas on Netflix

20--What can readers expect from you next?

My next book after Play For Me is planned for publication December 2024. It’s about a treasure hunter and the author who broke her heart and then wrote an adventure series featuring a barely fictionalized version of her, reuniting for another expedition, novel inspiration, and maybe a second chance (if she doesn’t hurl him into the sea first).

PLAY FOR ME by Libby Hubscher

Play For Me

When her new job takes her to a New England boarding school, she’s surprised to find her roommates are all men – including a very handsome one who plays by his own rules.

Sophie Doyle has her dream job as the head athletic trainer for her favorite baseball team (go Red Sox!), a handsome boyfriend, and easy access to the finest cannoli in Boston. When she loses all three and the World Series to boot, she’s forced to apply for the open trainer position at an arts-focused boarding school in New Hampshire. The only available room is a glorified closet in an apartment with three guys: Jonas Voss, the aloof and attractive orchestra teacher, and his two rambunctious roommates.

Sophie knows that training a bunch of privileged high school kids whose idea of a play is A Chorus Line instead of a walk-off homer is going to be a big change from the pro athletes she’s used to. She wasn’t expecting that these students would have big-time talent and even bigger-time problems. Sophie has troubles of her own—Jonas is a full-fledged grump who clearly doesn’t want her near him or the precious piano he never plays.

With sunny optimism, Sophie sets out to win over Jonas and help the kids she’s growing attached to. But when her relationship with Jonas moves to the major leagues and plans change at the end of the season, they have to choose whether they are playing for keeps.
