Jordan L. Hawk | 20 Questions: DECEIVER OF MINDS

facebooktwittergoodreadsblog

1--What is the title of your latest release?

DECEIVER OF MINDS (SPECTR 3.5)

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A federal exorcist falls in love with the demon he must destroy.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

All the SPECTR books take place in the south. For this series, I chose New Orleans solely so I could have the vampire lead a vampire tour.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

I’d hang out with Caleb and Gray any day.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

There are three in this series, so I’ll pick Gray: direct, hungry, and sweet.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Abandoned buildings in New Orleans, where most of the action takes place.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

It depends. I put off editing as much as possible until I’m done, so I only have to do one revision sweep, but if something radically changes as I’m writing, I’ll go back and rework the manuscript so I’m on solid footing for the third act.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Does craft beer count?

9--Describe your writing space/office!

My home office started life as a bedroom, which is convenient because we were able to convert the closet into a supply closet. I have a bunch of fan art on the wall facing me so I can look at it when I’m feeling down. I also have a giant white board that I use as a Kanban board, but that’s behind me so I’m not distracted while working.

10--Who is an author you admire?

I have a great deal of admiration for authors who’ve been writing for decades, consistently improving their craft and growing their business through all of the changes. I want to be like them when I grow up!

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Probably The Lord of the Rings when I was a kid. It made me want to be a writer.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I worked in traditional publishing for many years, realized I was better off building a business for myself as an indie. I started in 2011, published Hainted in September 2012, and never looked back.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Honestly it depends on my mood at any given time. For a while after the pandemic began, I didn’t seem to be able to concentrate on anything but true crime. Thankfully I was finally able to return to reading genre fiction, but I’m still reading a lot of nonfiction alongside it.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

That’s a tough one. Big Hero 6 is my comfort movie, so I’ve probably rewatched it more than other.

15--What is your favorite season?

Fall. I love the cooler weather, the colors, the way the air smells, all of it.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Pre-pandemic, we’d travel somewhere we hadn’t been before. Now I spend the day laying around reading.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I never miss the opportunity to recommend The Magnus Archives podcast. Incredible worldbuilding and writing, and very, very queer. In terms of podcasts that are still running, Old Gods of Appalachia and The Silt Verses are both amazing.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Anything spicy!

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Read and play video games.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

DECEIVER OF MINDS will be out June 24. I’m currently working on the second OutFoxing the Paranormal book, Rattling Bone.

DECEIVER OF MINDS by Jordan L. Hawk

SPECTR Series 3 #5

Deceiver of Minds

John Starkweather is reeling from the discovery that SPECTR, the agency to which he’s dedicated his life, experimented on him as a child. As his true memories continue to return, he has but one purpose: to find the other victims.

When John, Caleb, and Gray discover SPECTR has been tracking their every move, they’re left with only one choice: to go on the run and find the other victims before the agency catches up with them.

But the past isn’t done with John yet, and the truth about one of his fellow victims may hold devastating consequences for the future.
