James LePore | The Suspense Novel

I’ve heard it said that what drives a genre novel is plot, a comedic novel, voice and a literary novel, character. My novel, A World I Never Made, is a genre novel, a thriller, or, as it says on the cover, β€œa novel of suspense.” It seems to me, however, that a suspense novel can--and should--be character driven as well as story-driven. This is what I aimed for in A World I Never Made, the story of an estranged father and daughter who struggle to reconnect under an extraordinary set of circumstances. Those circumstances include a faked suicide, a betrayal inside the French government and the workings of a little known but extremely deadly terrorist organization. I hope that readers find both the story and the characters compelling and that they have as much fun reading the novel as I did writing it.

Good plot with suspense/betrayal and good character development... sounds like a good read to me!

Sounds super. Like Sara, I thrive on the spense/thriller genre. Particularly enjoy Gayle Lynd's work. I'm looking forward to reading your debut novel...Lots and lots of luck!

I'm also a big fan of thrillers, suspense and mysteries!

This one sounds great!

You are so correct. Suspense with no
great characters is rather flat. Both
are needed for a good story. I work at
a small county library and you are very
popular with our suspense readers.
We always make sure we have your
current books on the shelf. Thanks
for some great stroies.

I love suspense novels and you're right, they should also be character driven, plot just isn't enough to keep the readers attention. This book sounds really interesting!

I love thrillers!

I am the ultimate spence fan. I think I would love this.

Thank you all for your kind words and
good wishes. I hope you enjoy reading
the book as much as I did writing it.
