On the day of my wedding, I worried about getting crying and ruining my mascara the
second the service started. I didnโt and thought I was home free. That was until the
singer we hired stood with the string quartet and opened her mouth. My lower lip
trembled and tears spilled in a matter of seconds. That is the power of music.
Somehow I managed to get through it without the puffy eyes that usually accompany my
tears.
Writers often have playlists for their novels. For me such a thing kind of happens
by accident. Driving in the car, for example, I heard Imagine Dragonโs song โDemon,โ
and instantly knew it belonged to the main character in
HARVEST MOON, Trent Jamieson.
Trent has hoped his addiction issues are behind him, but it isnโt easy. He has a
history that follows him into his attempt at a new life.
The song โBlue Skies,โ written by Irving Berlin also played into my novel (I love
the version by Willie Nelson). Trent is a musician who plays the guitar and
performs. In his past, this was the song he selected to sing to his first wife at
their weddingโonly their life together wasnโt filled with blue skies. This song also
happens to a favorite Irving Berlin classic for our heroine, Veronica. Symbolically,
Veronica is waiting for her skies to clear.
I even found an instrumental I loved that reminded me of my hopeful story theme.
Sometimes Iโd just listen to it for inspiration. I ended up using it in a
book trailer for
Harvest Moon.

I was reading a book about a huge snow storm and I thought about White Christmas and found myself humming the song. I also love the movie of the same name and have watched it many times. Then I checked my email and read about some college students claiming that White Christmas should be banned "because it is racist". I wondered how they ever made it to college.
