I’m an author who takes her characters seriously. They aren’t chess pieces to be
moved through the plot for my convenience, they’re people, and all I want is for
them to find true love, to learn as painlessly as possible the lessons love has
to teach them.
In KISS ME
HELLO, attorney MacKenzie Knightley has seen both of his younger brothers
through their ups and downs to a happily ever after (Trent in A SINGLE
KISS, James in THE FIRST KISS). Mac is hardworking, kind, and generous with
his time and expertise—also cranky, shy, and lonely. Without brothers to fuss,
he’s also a little lost.
Along comes foster mom Sidonie Lindstrom, who’s also cranky, shy, and a little
lost, and magic happens.
When I’m finishing up a series, two competing forces are at work in the writing.
The first is a reluctance to say good-bye. By the fifth title in the series
(counting novellas—KISS AND TELL, KISS FOR
LUCK), I know these people as if they were family. I know their
homes, their brownie recipes, and their work days. I care about them, I want to
stay in touch, and yet I know, other characters need a happily ever after too.
Characters in contemporary Scotland, Regency characters and maybe even Victorian
Scottish character. I can’t write their stories if I don’t say at least a
temporary good-bye to my Sweetest Kisses family.
Fortunately, another factor keep me moving forward, and ensures Mac and Sid will
get their happily ever after: I have the momentum of the four previous titles,
clamoring at me to get Mac and Sid on the Happily Ever After boat too. All those
previous characters, James and Trent, Vera and Hannah, the unicorns, the little
girls, the horses, they’re ALL after me to do an excellent job for Mac, who’s
been so patient for so long.
It also helps that by the fifth title, I know the world inside out and upside
down. And finally, that last book of the series offers me the gratification of
wrapping up themes that have been connecting all five titles. The family farm is
in good hands, the law firm is in good hands, and I can move onto my next
project, with a little bit of happily ever after for myself, too!
