Natasha Moore | Thereโ€™s Something About the Ocean

amazonbookbubgoodreadsfacebooktwitter

Iโ€™ve lived around lakes my entire life. As a child, a big treat was going to one
of the parks, splashing in the water and playing in the sand. I love the water,
the sparkles of the sun reflecting off the surface, the holiday atmosphere of
the shore. But Iโ€™d never been to the ocean.

I was an adult before I ever made it to the coast of the Atlantic. And I was
transformed. That may sound melodramatic, but thatโ€™s the way I felt. I was
filled with a sense of awe, a primal pull that I hadnโ€™t expected and didnโ€™t
understand. Tears filled my eyes and I never wanted to leave.

Unfortunately, I couldnโ€™t stay. My home is still inland, near the lakes but not
the ocean. I was able to buy a house with a lake view, but thatโ€™s the closest
Iโ€™ve come. I visit the ocean as often as I can, most often to the Outer Banks in
North Carolina or the ocean-side of Florida. And I put the ocean in some of my
stories, so I can experience it through my characters too.

In THE COTTAGE NEXT DOOR, Hunter and Sylvie have both suffered losses and have come to the coast of Florida to do some soul-searching and decide what to do with the rest of their lives. I couldnโ€™t think of a better setting for them to fall in love. And I added a bit of my personal perspective into their conversations:

โ€œThis is my favorite time at the beach,โ€ he said, surprising her
with his deep, pleasant tone.

โ€œBecause you canโ€™t see the hundreds of people around you?โ€

His soft chuckle surprised her even more. He was quiet for a moment, then said,
โ€œPartly. But thereโ€™s something about the ocean at night. Do you hear it? Right
now, this isnโ€™t the fun-loving shore where kids splash and make sandcastles.
Itโ€™s more primitive.โ€ He was silent for a moment, and Sylvie got caught up in
the roar of the waves as they crashed onto the beach. The sound pulled at her,
called to her.

โ€œThink of the hundreds of thousands of years the ocean has been pounding the
sand,โ€ he went on. โ€œEating away at the land, reclaiming it. Taking it back into
the bowels of the deep.โ€

Her body heated more, even with the cooling breeze. His voice rolled over her,
as powerful as the tug of the waves. Sheโ€™d known there had to be more to him
than that angry, bitter man sheโ€™d seen so far.

โ€œAshes to ashes? Dust to dust? Ocean to ocean?โ€ she asked softly.

The waves pummeled the shore for several long moments before he replied, โ€œSomething like that.โ€

What about you? Do you love the ocean as much as I do? Or is there another place
that calls to you? Do you visit often? Or are you able to live there and enjoy
it every day?

Re: Natasha Moore | Thereโ€™s Something About the Ocean

I live near one of the Great Lakes, and just moved here a
few years ago, after living in the city my entire life. You
could say that I have the best of both worlds, since I'm
surrounded by farmland as well, so when I've had enough of
the beachgoers, as well as the tourists, I can go back home,
and be surrounded by acreage which is part farmland and the
rest is woodlands. I was fortunate enough to see the
Atlantic Ocean when I was treated to a trip to Atlantic
City, and I was in love. In fact, my Sister and I took
another trip out there, not knowing that on that day, there
was a hurricane that was going to be arriving the next day.
It was really quite the experience to wade in the water,
while it was churning madly, with the hurricane a few
hundred miles away!! Lakes are big, but there are no words
to describe the ocean!! I'm in love with both, but am
grateful to live near the lake. This is where I was meant
to be, and where I've always wanted to live. I can't wait
to read your book!! I'm sure I'll be able to relate to it.

ocean ocean ocean - I live close enough to be on a beach in 20 minutes and sometimes when the wind is just right, can even smell it! The sand is hard-packed, the waves very gentle, the water is, well, character-building! But so soul refreshing to be able to walk and walk on that sand and in the water, looking for sand dollars and watching the gulls strut back and forth. Love that Revere Beach!
