What is the title of your latest release?
MURDER ON VACATION
What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Abby Jones is ready to set her amateur sleuthing to the side and enjoy a romantic lakeside vacation with her boyfriend Nathan. But when the beloved owner of the local bed and breakfast is shockingly murdered - and Nathan was the last person to see her alive - Abby puts her detective skills to the test yet again. It’s up to Abby (and you!) to piece together the clues and catch the killer!
How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
The wonderful folks at Adams Media had the idea for a murder on vacation at a quaint inn, and I thought, what about a “locked room” murder - the inspiration being Agatha Christie’s, THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD, of course.
Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Absolutely! She does word searches, loves books, and she isn’t afraid to question people’s motives. That’s the type of nosy introvert I’d love as a friend.
What are three words that describe your hero?
Nosy, bookish, and kind.
What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned a lot about a particular type of poison - no spoilers here, but it was fascinating to research the applications of said poison.
Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I do a combination of both. Sometimes, I’ll write a sentence and think, “Well, that’s just awful” and then rewrite it. Then when I run through the draft after writing it, I’ll realize the sentence I had originally wasn’t as bad as what I replaced it with. Ha!
What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I have a regrettable sweet tooth. Cakes, cupcakes, chocolates, and especially cheesecake.
Describe your writing space/office!
My writing space is stocked with books by great authors, both independently and traditionally published. It’s a small space, but I have a view of a mountain, one standing desk and one sitting desk so that I can alternate!
Who is an author you admire?
Agatha Christie, of course!
Is there a book that changed your life?
Carl Hiaasen’s, SICK PUPPY, changed my life. It made me laugh so hard I woke up my son in the next room, and it taught me that writing can be irreverent. And that being different is a superpower.
Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I decided to self-publish after ghostwriting for years and finally realized I could do this for myself and my writing was worthy - I think many writers feel that way, and my advice would be to go ahead and follow your dreams rather than wait as long as I did. And for this fantastic series of word search mysteries, I received an email from Julia Belkas, at Adams Media, and I could scarcely believe my eyes. How exciting!
What’s your favorite genre to read?
I love several genres, epic fantasy, mysteries, and romance. I love reading authors with fresh stories and different perspectives.
What’s your favorite movie?
This is a tie between The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Withnail & I, and Amelie.
What is your favorite season?
I love cozying up with a good book during winter!
How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I am not huge on celebrating my own birthday. I tend to prefer low-key celebrations and small gifts. I love my alone time and will often read a book or play a game at home then go out to eat with my loved ones.
What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
This is not a podcast or show but recently, I’ve been torn between watching a lot of mountain climbing documentaries (there’s a story in there, somewhere, a murder at the top of the mountain, perhaps?) and the WNBA. I tend to flit from genre to genre or podcast to podcast. I am a fan of the strange and outlandish as well, like Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast.
What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Italian, probably! Any Mediterranean cuisine is at the top of my list.
What do you do when you have free time?
I read, play games, cook, spend time with family, and go on walks or hiking.
What can readers expect from you next?
Well, more from Abby in Cranberry Creek, of course. They can expect a delightful Christmas caper which they’ll sleuth along to as the mystery unfolds.
