What is the title of your latest release?
NOT YOU AGAIN
What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
A bi-sexual funeral director and an aspiring screenwriter have to team up in order to stop the Groundhog’s Day time loop they’ve been trapped in. It’s Palm Springs meets Six Feet Under.
How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I did a lot of research around supernatural hotspots in California, and eventually landed on Julian, which is a small town and one of the few places that’s considered a Dark Sky Community in the United States. That means the air quality is preserved through lack of harsh lights at night—perfect place to tell a story involving a time loop happening during a total eclipse.
Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Absolutely. She loves movies, cheese, and chases her dreams — she’s a badass.
What are three words that describe your hero?
Selfless, empathetic, loyal
What’s something you learned while writing this book?
This book dives into processing grief, and the idea of needing your own time to work through it. So as I was writing this, I think it helped me better process some of the grief I’ve had in my personal life, too.
Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I usually get a messy draft, and then completely rewrite that. I did that (unfortunately) three times with this book, because I really wanted to get it right.
What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Sugar of all kinds, but when I’m writing I always crave Swedish gummies. Sooooo good.
Describe your writing space/office!
I do technically have an office, which is lined with books I love, books I’ve written, and random things, like the DVD set of Pete & Pete. But I usually write on my couch—it just gets me going.
Who is an author you admire?
I really love Alexis Hall. I always recommend his books. His writing is so sharp, like a joke every line kind of sharp. If he ever reads a book of mine, I’ll feel complete.
Is there a book that changed your life?
I think Jasmine Guillory’s books really made me want to write romance. They brought so much joy into my life, and I wanted to do the same for readers.
Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I remember that it was the middle of Covid, like, end of 2020, so we were all still isolating, masking and, in general, having a bad time. I was in my office, working at my day job, and my wonderful agent Jess Errera called to tell me the news. It was such a bright beam of light in an otherwise super dark time. Truly a wonderful moment, so thanks for letting me think of that again.
What’s your favorite genre to read?
Contemporary romance
What’s your favorite movie?
Bridget Jones’ Diary
What is your favorite season?
Fall (specifically in LA)
How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I don’t really like big parties for myself, but love throwing them for other people. This past year I turned 40 and took my closest friends to Little Tokyo in Los Angeles for a food crawl. We had matcha and udon and it was so lovely.
What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I just saw One Battle After Another, and it was a really great movie to see in the theater. The pacing is high energy, non-stop, and it’s dark and funny.
What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I really love Japanese food, in general. I was lucky enough to visit Japan a few years ago, and I often fantasize about the breakfasts I had there of rice and fish and soup.
What do you do when you have free time?
I have two little kids, and I genuinely love spending time with them. So, for example, I’m writing this early enough in the morning that they’re still asleep, but I’m very excited to take them to the beach when they wake up. I’m happiest when I’m spending time with my family.
What can readers expect from you next?
I’m currently working on a new book, that’s set in Italy and feels a bit like White Lotus meets The Idea of You. I’m having a lot of fun with it, so we’ll see where it takes me!
Narrator: Mela Lee

They have nothing but time...to hate each other.
In Julian, California, every day is April 23rd—and in a time loop, there are no rules. Eating endless slices of fresh apple pie? Yes. Partner swapping? Why not. Being trapped inside the plot of a sci-fi film would almost be inspiring for LA screenwriter Carly Hart…if she wasn’t waking up at her dad’s funeral every single day. Carly wants out.
Funeral director Adam Rhodes is equally frustrated. Every loop, Adam regenerates in the middle of a fight with his ex-wife. Her infidelity wrecked their perfect life together, and now Adam must relive her confession over and over again.
There’s only one solution to ending the misery: breaking the time loop. Easier said than done. And there’s another hurdle to overcome: Carly and Adam can’t stand each other.
Though strangers at best, Carly and Adam know they must work together to solve this cosmic mystery. But where Carly offers magical theories, Adam relies on facts and figures. When Carly wants to involve the local conspiracy theorist, Adam would rather work alone. The sooner they find a solution, the sooner they’ll never have to see each other again, yet somehow the tension between the two is hotter than a solar flare and as rare as the daily total solar eclipse. Maybe Carly and Adam are destined to be in each other’s orbit after all…
