Cody, Wyoming is the most patriotic town I have ever been in, with five days of celebrations around the Fourth of July. The first time we celebrated the 4th in Cody was in 2021 on our big 109-day go west trip. The second was when we lived in downtown Cody in 2023.

Here in North Carolina this year, we’re celebrating the fourth of July this weekend along with the release of my newest book, Montana Delta Rodeo Cowboy: Bodyguard Protector which has a scene which puts reader right into the stadium at the big rodeo stampede in Cody, WY on the fourth of July with the hero and heroine.
Now let me take you back to our 2021 experiences.

June 30th was the start, with the Extreme Bulls rodeo. We got tickets, and on the advice of a local, also got tickets to a nearby chuckwagon supper and show. After we ate, we could walk from the show to the stadium for the rodeo. Everything about the evening was amazing and I highly recommend this experience.

There are three parades annually in Cody to celebrate the Fourth. One on the 3rd, one on the 4th, and they even have a children’s parade. So that’s three chances to watch a Fourth of July parade in Cody. One exciting thing about watching parages out west is when they start the parade with longhorns coming down the street. I find that exciting every time.
We attended two parades in 2021. On the morning of July 3rd, we found places near the Irma Hotel where the announcer was speaking from the second floor.
On the morning of the 4th, there was a second, larger parade. We sat on the corner at the other end of the street where there was a second announcer.

That evening we went to the top of a hill overlooking the city and land beyond to watch the fireworks. This is where the locals go to watch them. The fireworks bursting over the landscape were spectacular.

Then there’s the Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede Rodeo which draws tourists from all over the world to Cody, Wyoming. Rodeo happens in Cody every night of the summer, so you can always catch one, but for the Stampede, get your tickets ahead of time. These tickets can sell out right after they become available.
In 2021 we were unable to get tickets for the rodeo on the 4th but got tickets for the June 30th extreme bulls. So exciting! I hold my breath when a cowboy is riding one of those bulls and when the rodeo clowns do things to get the bulls attention. This is a sport which is inherently dangerous.
When we went to live and work in Cody in 2023, we knew to watch for Stampede tickets for the 4th to become available. We bought two.
In 2023 we went to the parade on the 4th and moved down the street in the other direction closer to the start. Our grandson was visiting and got to see the longhorns and all the horses and cowboys. It rained that day, so I don’t have as many pictures.
