1--What is the title of your latest release?
THE VILLAGE LIBRARY DEMON-HUNTING SOCIETY
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
It’s “Murder, She Wrote” meets “Buffy the Vampire Slayer!”
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I knew that I wanted to set it in an imaginary cozy little town in the Northeastern US – I thought about Vermont, but settled on the Capital District of Upstate NY, since I thought it would be easier and more fun to write a convincing little town based on my home turf.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Absolutely! I think Sherry would be a ton of fun to get drinks and giggle with. I’m also in the market for older female friends – I really enjoy talking to people from different generations, and in my experience the older people are the more interesting stories they have to tell!
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Observant, loyal, inquisitive.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
That priests who want to become exorcists have to attend a special seminar at the Vatican! I love imagining it as being like a normal professional seminar with name lanyards and mediocre catered lunches, but with demons instead of quarterly financial goals.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I edit, edit, and edit some more as I draft, and I keep on editing until my poor editor is forced to wrench the book out of my grasping little claws so someone else can look at it.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
This is a tough question for me, because I love food so much! The answer might be a really, really good soup dumpling.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I usually prefer to pack up my laptop and take it to one of a rotating cast of local coffee shops to get some writing done. My current favorite is the patio of a little coffee shop called JA Pequeno in Albany. There’s lots of pretty plants and big umbrellas for shade, and I’ll often happily camp out there for hours.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Another impossible question! It’s too hard to pick just one. I love a lot of classics and older stuff, so P.G. Wodehouse, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Raymond Chandler, Oscar Wilde and Agatha Christie all spring to mind.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
The Picture of Dorian Gray. I read it when I was fourteen and Wilde’s use of language absolutely blew my mind. As an adult I vastly prefer his plays, but Dorian Gray was perfect for me as a dramatic teenager who was just starting to think about writing more seriously.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I don’t actually remember one specific “it’s happening!” call when my first book was published, since it was such a long multi-step process. I do remember pacing around the teeny tiny living room of the apartment I was living in on three-way calls with my agent and interested editors, and being so amazed and delighted by the fact that these smart, funny, professional people had actually enjoyed my book enough to want to work with me!
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Mysteries? Domestic thrillers? Fantasy? Historical nonfiction? I love reading pretty broadly across genres – anything that catches my interest!
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Probably The Grand Budapest Hotel.
15--What is your favorite season?
Fall, definitely.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
If not a little trip, then definitely dinner out somewhere with a really good cocktail menu. I also always have a birthday cake!
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I have a very busy toddler who keeps me occupied for most of my non-writing waking hours, so I’ve been terrible at keeping up with anything recent lately. That said, I’m currently listening to the new Liane Moriarty book, Here One Moment, and it’s a lot of fun so far.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I’ll cheat and say Chinese, because that’s about twenty different delicious cuisines under one umbrella.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I love hanging out with friends, cooking and baking, trying out new bars and restaurants, going on long walks, travel, swimming, drawing and reading. Writing is also still my favorite hobby on top of being my career. Right now, my biggest issue is finding any free time!
20--What can readers expect from you next?
I have a few different projects simmering away. Maybe the next one to be out in the world will be a comic novella, or a new romantasy novel, or a creepy-funny superhero comic. Stay tuned!
A librarian with a knack for solving murders realizes there is something decidedly supernatural afoot in her little town in this cozy fantasy mystery.
Librarian Sherry Pinkwhistle keeps finding bodies—and solving murders. But she's concerned by just how many killers she's had to track down in her quaint village. None of her neighbors seem surprised by the rising body count...but Sherry is becoming convinced that whatever has been causing these deaths is unnatural.
When someone close to Sherry ends up dead, and her cat, Lord Thomas Crowell, becomes possessed by what seems to be an ancient demon, Sherry begins to think she’s going to need to become an exorcist as well as an amateur sleuth. With the help of her town's new priest, and an assortment of friends who dub themselves the "Demon-Hunting Society," Sherry will have to solve the murder and get rid of a demon.
This riotous mix of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Murder, She Wrote is a lesson for demons and murderers alike: Never mess with a librarian.

Splendid and hilarious genre mash up of cozy mysteries and urban fantasies
C.M. Waggoner grew up in rural upstate New York, where she spent a lot of time reading fantasy novels in a swamp. She studied creative writing at SUNY Purchase and lived in China for eight years before moving with her husband to Albany, NY. In her spare time, she volunteers, performs kitchen experiments, asks if she can pet your dog, and gardens badly.
