Have you ever wondered why so many cozy mysteries are set in idyllic towns and yet the murder rate is sky-high? Maybe it’s demons….
Sherry Pinkwhistle is the town librarian who enjoys her quiet life with her cat, Lord Thomas Cromwell. Solving murders delights her as she envisions herself as an Agatha Christie character, such as Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot, and it’s fun to outwit Sheriff Brown each time a murder happens in Winesap. All of that changes, however, when murder hits too close to home and her cat starts talking to her, claiming he’s actually Lord Thomas Cromwell. Worse, her cat claims she’s in the middle of a tale orchestrated by something old and demonic. Has Sherry lost her mind or are demons behind all the deaths in the town of Winesap, New York? Luckily, a new priest in town takes Sherry seriously and it’s up to the newly dubbed Demon Hunting Society to not only solve a murder but to rid Winesap of any demons once and for all.
I don’t know when I last laughed so hard and so many times while reading a book. THE VILLAGE LIBRARY DEMON HUNTING SOCIETY takes all the cozy mystery tropes and turns them upside down, spins their heads around like the exorcist, and has fun all the while! The concept is, dare I say, diabolically clever as the number of deaths in peaceful cozy mystery towns is quite atrocious and I’m not sure I won’t laugh a little about it each time I read a cozy mystery now.
Sherry is the perfect cozy mystery-style main character, which makes her involvement as a demon hunter all the more entertaining. The quirkiness alone would have made THE VILLAGE LIBRARY DEMON HUNTING SOCIETY a hit, but the creative and clever repartee and the well-developed characters ensure that readers will be coming back for more. Heck, I’m still laughing now and ready to do a reread all over again just because the storyline is THAT much fun!
THE VILLAGE LIBRARY DEMON HUNTING SOCIETY is a splendid genre mashup of cozy mysteries and urban fantasies. Readers who are fans of either genre should give C.M. Waggoner’s tale a shot, as the odds are they will find themselves hooked by this hilarious story. I can’t wait to read more by C.M. Waggoner, particularly any further adventures of Sherry Pinkwhistle and friends!
A librarian with a knack for solving murders realizes there is something decidedly supernatural afoot in her little town in this cozy fantasy mystery.
Librarian Sherry Pinkwhistle keeps finding bodies—and solving murders. But she's concerned by just how many killers she's had to track down in her quaint village. None of her neighbors seem surprised by the rising body count...but Sherry is becoming convinced that whatever has been causing these deaths is unnatural.
When someone close to Sherry ends up dead, and her cat, Lord Thomas Crowell, becomes possessed by what seems to be an ancient demon, Sherry begins to think she’s going to need to become an exorcist as well as an amateur sleuth. With the help of her town's new priest, and an assortment of friends who dub themselves the "Demon-Hunting Society," Sherry will have to solve the murder and get rid of a demon.
This riotous mix of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Murder, She Wrote is a lesson for demons and murderers alike: Never mess with a librarian.
