1--What is the title of your latest release?
ONE-STAR ROMANCE
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
A struggling writer must walk down the aisle at her best friend’s wedding with a man who gave her book one star on Goodreads. Though this maid of honor and best man would rather never see each other again, they’re forced back together over the course of a decade every time their best friends celebrate a new life milestone.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
Having spent much of my twenties and early thirties in the NYC area, it felt very natural to set much of the book there.
4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Absolutely!
5--What are three words that describe your hero?
Creative, funny, loyal
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned a lot of linguistics terminology, since my romantic lead is an aspiring linguistics professor and I had to figure out what his freaking dissertation was going to be called
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I try to wait to do significant edits until I’m done, though sometimes I can’t stop myself from tinkering.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Trader Joes dark chocolate peanut butter cups
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I have my grandmother’s old secretary desk, lots of books about writing and the creative process, a fun yellow rug, and pictures of family and places that have meant a lot to me.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Tia Williams
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Tiny Beautiful Things, a series of advice essays by Cheryl Strayed, was a huge comfort and inspiration to me when I was in my twenties (and going through some of the doubts that my main characters experience in the novel!)
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)
I was lucky enough to have this be the second in a two-book deal, so it was less about “getting the call” for this one and more like my editor, agent, and I were emailing back and forth about ideas until one really sparked for us all. But still, that spark was quite exciting!
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Oh, I love so many different ones! Romance, of course, but also a mini-genre I think of as “flawed women in their 20s/30s figuring things out” (recent examples include Writers & Lovers and The Rachel Incident)
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar
15--What is your favorite season?
Autumn
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
It often happens shortly after I’ve already made everyone I know come out to celebrate a book event, so it’s generally a smaller affair — a really good dinner with close friends and family
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Challengers
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Thai
19--What do you do when you have free time?
Read!
A struggling writer is forced to walk down the aisle at her best friend’s wedding with the man who gave her book a very public one-star rating in this fresh romantic comedy from Laura Hankin.
Natalie and Rob couldn’t have less in common. Nat’s a messy artist, and Rob’s a rigid academic. The only thing they share is their devotion to their respective best friends—who just got engaged. Still, unexpected chemistry has Natalie cautiously optimistic about being maid of honor to Rob’s best man.
Until, minutes before the ceremony, Nat learns that Rob wrote a one-star review of her new novel, which has them both reeling: Nat from imposter syndrome, and Rob over the reason he needed to write it.
When the reception ends, these two opposites hope they’ll never meet again. But, as they slip from their twenties into their thirties, they’re forced together whenever their fast-track best friends celebrate another milestone. Through housewarmings and christenings, life-changing triumphs and failures, Natalie and Rob grapple with their own choices—and how your harshest critic can become your perfectly imperfect match.
After all, even the truest love stories sometimes need a bit of rewriting.
