Instead of trying to find your perfect match in a dating app, we bring you the “Author-Reader Match" where we introduce you to authors you may fall in love with. It's our great pleasure to present Carolyn Haines!
Writes:
Carolyn Haines might be described as a crazy cat lady. Along with writing mysteries, she runs an animal rescue at her farm in a small Alabama town. Her award-winning Sarah Booth Delaney mysteries (she is working on the 30th in the series) involve a cast of characters that any reader could love. Haines grew up in a small Mississippi town and her work as a journalist opened doors to aspects of her state that involve folk lore, legend, and a keen sense of place. Readers are always welcomed into her life—which she lives vicariously through Sarah Booth, her protagonist. Fun, feisty, and never dull, Sarah Booth is a fun character to write.
About:
Carolyn loves books with deep roots and a sense of place. She believes characters grow from the soil where the live. Mysteries are her favorite genre because justice prevails in mysteries, if not always in real life. The characters in the Sarah Booth series are people you know and could fall in love with. Folks you’d invite in for a cup of coffee or a cool “libation.” The books have comedic moments and the banter between the characters is a huge part of their appeal. The character of Jitty, an ancestral ghost, connects Sarah Booth with the past and a tenuous link to the people she has lost.
What I’m looking for in an ideal reader match:
- A lover of justice
- A sense of humor
- Must love animals!
- A villain who must be found through the clues in the book
- A wild ride with a hint of paranormal
What to expect if we’re compatible:
If we’re compatible, you’ll want to read all of the Sarah Booth mysteries—though it isn’t necessary to read them in order. Each book is a standalone mystery. You’ll get hooked on the characters and the very deep and real friendships they share. The characters grow and change, just as friends do in real life. And you’ll laugh at the antics of Jitty the ghost as she devils Sarah Booth about having an heir for Jitty to haunt. You’ll also want to join Carolyn’s newsletter on her website to keep up to date with all the critters and crazy developments.
The latest novel in the series that Kirkus Reviews characterizes as “Stephanie Plum meets the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” featuring sassy Southern private investigator Sarah Booth Delaney.
Delaney Detective Agency gets a taste of the spotlight when they are called to a case on a movie set in Greenville, MS, right on the Mississippi River. Marlon Brandon, heir to a wealthy and influential political family, has brought a film crew to town to film a drama about the 1927 flood that submerged a great deal of Greenville. Marlon wants the world to know the story of the flood—and the heroic role the Brandon ancestors played in rescuing dozens of local residents from drowning.
Or at least that was the plan until he disappeared. If this weren't concerning enough, the situation appears even more dire when a severed foot is discovered in the Mississippi River, and clues indicate that Marlon may have fallen victim to a freak bull shark attack.
But as rumors swirl around the Delta about Marlon's motives for making the film, Sarah Booth and Tinkie have to wonder whether a shark is to blame, or an equally ferocious human offender. The show must go on, and Sarah Booth and her crew will have to investigate all manner of creatures, over land and sea, in order to solve the mystery and save the day.

Carolyn Haines, winner of the Harper Lee Award for Distinguished Fiction and the Richard Wright Award for Literary Excellence, grew up wanting to be Nancy Drew and a cowgirl. Reading and solving mysteries is a big part of her life. She loves reading and talking with authors about their work. She taught fiction writing at a university for fourteen years. Today, she is able to pursue her twin addictions (horses and solving mysteries) through her writing.
