Timothy Miller | Sherlock Holmes Takes on the Curse of Tutankhamun

facebooktwittergoodreadsamazon

1--What is the title of your latest release?

THE STRANGE CASE OF THE PHAROAH’S HEART

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Sherlock Holmes takes on the curse of Tutankhamun.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Luxor and London were pretty much de rigeur for a story about Sherlock Holmes and the pharaoh’s curse. Monte Carlo was just for fun, and the Reichenbach Falls seemed like a good place to kill off Holmes. Wait! Did I say that? Did I do that?

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Well, I’d love to live in London, but I’m not crazy about coal fires or cholera.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

There are three protagonists, so I would have to say: mystical, skeptical, logical.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

There was an immense amount of skullduggery going on with the exploration of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

For me, it’s like a balloon. Once I have the balloon, I stretch it out, then blow it up. So I’m applying pressure at every point all at once.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Cheesecake. Why did you have to remind me?

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I would, but I can’t remember what it looks like under the blizzard of paper. Is that a pizza box?

10--Who is an author you admire?

People don’t realize how funny Dickens is. In Dickens, everything is alive and sentient. The same goes for Richard Brautigan, but in a different way.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Franny and Zooey. “And don't you know who the Fat Lady really is? Ah, buddy. Ah, buddy. It's Christ Himself. Christ Himself, buddy."

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

My road to publication was full of detours. Let’s just say I got the call twice, from the same imprint but a different publisher. I can’t really say it’s dawned on me yet, even though this is my third book.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Magical realism, but it’s incredibly difficult to get right, like juggling souffles.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

To Have and Have Not. Bogie meets Bacall.

15--What is your favorite season?

“They will not hush, the leaves a-flutter round me, the beech leaves old.”

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

In a bunker.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Disruption: Stories. I’m not a short story person, but Steven Millhauser is the exception. Every story takes place on the edge of a dream, and the dreams are each unique.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

I’d like to write a cookbook called 365 Days of Enchiladas, which each day features a different kind of enchilada. Copious research.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

What is this “free time” you speak of?

20--What can readers expect from you next?

Something completely different. Raymond Chandler meets Luigi Pirandello.

THE STRANGE CASE OF THE PHARAOH'S HEART by Timothy Miller

The Strange Case of the Pharaoh's Heart

To crack the case the time around, Sherlock Holmes must return to the place he swore he'd never revisit and face his demons. . . literally . . .

1923: In his last years, Sherlock Holmes has abandoned his strict method of logic for the practice of spiritualism, to the everlasting shame of his old friend Dr. Watson. When Lord Carnarvon dies unexpectedly, barely two months after opening the tomb of Tutankhamun, Holmes blames his death—and a string of others, from an American millionaire to an Egyptian prince, on an ancient curse. But Watson, never one for the supernatural, decides to finally part ways with the formerly great detective.

However, shortly after his departure from Holmes, Lord Carnarvon’s daughter, Lady Evelyn, approaches Watson with a plea: accompany Holmes to Tutankhamun’s tomb to uncover the truth of her father’s death, whether natural, supernatural, or cold-blooded murder. Watson reluctantly accepts the challenge. But much to his displeasure, there’s a third member of their company—Mrs. Estelle Roberts, who communicates with the dead.

Although divided by different beliefs, the trio must band together to unravel the extraordinary secret of the boy king and the treasure missing from his tomb that men have killed for. Their journey takes them from London to Monte Carlo to Cairo and Luxor, and finally to the place that haunts Sherlock Holmes’s dreams, the place he swore never to return to: the Reichenbach Falls, where the spirit of the one man he killed in his long career may be awaiting its revenge: Moriarty.
