Laura Griffin | Who doesn’t love a good page-turner?

twitterfacebook

My favorite experience as a reader is to be riveted by a book and simply unable
to stop reading while time ticks by all around me.

As you can imagine, this drives my family nuts. I have certain favorite authors (Linda Howard, Karen Robards, Patricia Cornwell, Lee Child, just to name a few), whose books seem to grab hold of me, shove me into a chair, and demand that I stay there until the very last page. Occasionally, I do get up to answer the phone, feed my family, or grab an Oreo, but sleep and other unnecessary activities fall by the wayside. What are your favorite page-turners? For me, they’re often mysteries or romantic suspense stories. (My favorite genre! Which is probably why I love to read it as well as write it!) And sometimes a page-turner isn’t scary at all, but rather a love story that pulls you in and makes you really care about the characters. The Time Traveler’s Wife is an example that comes to mind. Or This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I could go on and on.

My most treasured emails from readers are, ironically, the slightly annoyed
ones where people say something like, β€œWell, I’m a zombie today because I
stayed up til 2 a.m. finishing your book…” or β€œI couldn’t put it down and had
my nose in it through the entire softball game…” For me, this is the highest
compliment.

I hope you’ll drop me a line on the blog here or at laura@lauragriffin.com and tell me about your favorite page-turners. I have to admit, I have ulterior motives for this informal survey … I’m looking for examples for a talk next month with a writers’ group in Houston. So I’d love your input! And please check out my next release, Whisper of Warning, which features a woman who finds herself at the heart of a brutal murder plot, and also finds herself falling in love with the detective assigned to solve the case. Fresh Fiction was kind enough to call Whisper of Warning, β€œa gripping romantic suspense that will keep you guessing until the last page.” I hope you’ll agree!

My Favorite Page-Turners that…

made me laugh: One for the Money by Janet Evanovich made me cry: This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips made me terrified: Pet Sematary (sp) by Stephen King made me late for work: Out of Control by Suzanne Brockmann made me afraid to walk to my car at night: The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris Laura Griffin is the award-winning author of numerous romantic suspense novels, including WHISPER OF WARNING and THREAD OF FEAR.

Laura, those are some of my faves, too! I still giggle over SEP's IT HAD TO BE YOU & HEAVEN TEXAS, and I run for the Puffs Plus when I even think about Suz Brockmann's UNSUNG HERO. Books I can't put down are Robert B. Parker--I'd crawl across broken glass for that guy . . .

I loved Thread of Fear and have been looking forward to reading Whisper of Warning. I also love Lisa Jackson, I just finished reading an older book by her called Intimacies. Susan Crandall also has a new book out that you can't read with the lights out called Seeing Red. Right now I am in the middle of Karen Robard's Pursuit.

I also love mysteries, especially psychological thrillers. Other books that keep me pinned to my seat are those that add a touch of comedy. They make me keep reading while I laugh at the antics of the characters.

To see the word "page-turner" makes me laugh, since I used to think this was the person sitting on the bench next to the piano player. Flipping through pages of my favorite books, now I enjoy romance, historical or otherwise and am delving more into mysteries.

Catherine Coulter's FBI thrillers. Wow! Talk about getting your attention!. Love them and I just finished reading "The Murder Game" by Beverly Barton, and couldn't put it down until I was done. Books that keep me guessing and wondering what's going to happen next are the ones I look for.

You & the folks here have named most of my favorite "page-turning" authors. One not mentioned is JA Konrath and his alter-ego, Jack Kilborn. His Konrath series is about a Chicago cop & is suspense & comedy; He just 3/31 released his first Jack Kilborn book and it is the SCARIEST book I have ever read including Pet Semetary! And Charlotte Hughes series about a Psychologist is also comedy & suspense. But definitely anything by Suzanne Brockmann, Catherine Coulter, Patricia Cornwell, Nicholas Sparks, and I could go on!!

I love it when I get so engrossed in a
book that I am dead to the world. This
actually happens a lot. Thanks to wonder
authors like yourself:)
