She leaned across the table and held his gaze. โ€œI heard they found a murdered body not too
far away.โ€ Her voice was appropriately quiet, but fascination burned in her eyes.

Alarms rang in Ollieโ€™s head.

โ€œDo you know if thatโ€™s true?โ€ Tabitha asked. โ€œOr are people making stuff up?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true,โ€ he admitted.

Her eyes widened. โ€œOh! How scary โ€ฆ Did they catch who did it?โ€

โ€œIt happened a long time ago,โ€ Ollie informed her, feeling a little guilty for talking about the
dead. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t really a body โ€ฆ Just a skeleton was left.โ€ An image of the skullโ€™s bullet hole
flashed in his mind.

โ€œDo they know who it was? Or how long ago it happened?โ€ She took another bite, her gaze
never leaving his as she hung on every word. Melted soft serve dripped on the table.

โ€œWell โ€ฆ donโ€™t tell anyone, but they think itโ€™s related to a big robbery that happened in Portland
a long time ago.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not talking about the Gamble-Helmet Heist, are you?โ€

Ollie froze. โ€œHowโ€™d you know?โ€

โ€œEveryone knows about it.โ€ She shrugged and looked at her parfait as she scooped up fudge
and peanuts. โ€œIf itโ€™s related to that, then whose skeleton is it?โ€

Ellis Mull. Heโ€™d heard Truman and Mercy discussing it yesterday, but something stopped him
from saying it out loud. โ€œDunno.โ€

โ€œSurely youโ€™ve heard something.โ€

Is that what it looks like when someone bats their eyelashes? Ollie abruptly felt as if heโ€™d been
trapped. โ€œNothing.โ€ He took another bite of his burger and studied the girl through fresh eyes.

โ€œWhat are you doing in Eagleโ€™s Nest?โ€

She looked at her ice cream. โ€œWork stuff.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of work do you do?โ€ Now that his brain was functioning, the world appeared
crystal clear, and a murky cloud of suspicion clung to Tabitha.

โ€œI just need to write up something. Say โ€ฆ is there a movie theater around here?โ€ she asked
with hope in her eyes.

โ€œNo. The closest theater is in Bend. What do you write?โ€

Her winning smile had lost some of its warmth. โ€œJust little articles. Like what itโ€™s like to live in a
small town such as this one.โ€

โ€œUsually itโ€™s pretty great to live here. Do you have a business card?โ€

Now her smile vanished. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™ve hinted several times that I want to know what you do.โ€

โ€œWell, I havenโ€™t pressured you to tell me what you do.โ€ She thrust her chin forward and
stubbornly tilted her head.

โ€œI work in the warehouse for Lake Ski and Sports, and I also detail cars at a dealership in Bend.
Iโ€™m not in school, but I take online courses and plan to start at the community college for
summer session. See? Itโ€™s not hard to be forthright.โ€ He held her gaze as he took another bite
of burger, thoroughly chewed and then swallowed. โ€œWhy do I feel like youโ€™re playing me? Iโ€™ve
got nothing anyone could want.โ€ Except access to the police chief and an FBI agent.

Tabitha slipped a card out of her purse and pushed it across the table.

โ€œYou write for a tabloid.โ€ Heโ€™d scanned the headlines in stores as a kid, hungry for information.
Any information.

โ€œI donโ€™t write anything thatโ€™s not true.โ€

โ€œI recently saw a headline about the president having seven toes on one foot.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t write it.โ€

โ€œYou have higher standards?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a job. My pieces are factual and well written.โ€

โ€œWhy did you target me?โ€ Does she know I found the body?

She stirred her fudge into the melting ice cream, watching it blend together. โ€œI saw you leave
the house where Agent Kilpatrick spent the night. She doesnโ€™t live there, right?โ€

Ollie ignored her question. โ€œYou followed me? After youโ€™d already followed Mercy to the
house?โ€ Dread crawled up his spine. Mercy and Truman were not going to like these facts.

โ€œI didnโ€™t get any information when I talked to the FBI agent, and I figured the police chief
wouldnโ€™t talk to me either, so I decided on a different approach when I spotted you.โ€ She was
all business now. The earlier flirtation was completely gone.

โ€œNobody in Eagleโ€™s Nest will give you information for your story.โ€

A slow, wide smile answered him. โ€œPeople always talk. Iโ€™ll figure out the right way to approach
them.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve struck out twice now.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll have to keep swinging, wonโ€™t I? Donโ€™t worry about me.โ€ She batted the eyelashes
again. โ€œI always come out on top. By tomorrow, that FBI agent will wish sheโ€™d answered my
questions.โ€

Ollie set down his last bite of burger, bile burning in his stomach. โ€œAre you threatening
Mercy?โ€

Her laugh was forced. โ€œOf course not. I meant sheโ€™ll wish sheโ€™d been my source.โ€

Ollie took a long look at Tabitha. Under his stare, she blinked several times and tried
unsuccessfully to smile. โ€œThatโ€™s my family youโ€™re talking about,โ€ he stated quietly.

โ€œI happen to know youโ€™re not related,โ€ she snapped.

โ€œFamily is more than bloodlines. Itโ€™s also the people you choose to be in your life. I chose
them.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not making any sense.โ€

โ€œAll you need to understand is that if you do something to embarrass Mercy or Truman, youโ€™ll
be answering to me.โ€

Mercy Kilpatrick, #5
A Merciful Fate
In the next book in the Wall Street Journal bestselling Mercy Kilpatrick series, there are no such things as little secretsโ€ฆ

Raised by preppers, survivalist and FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick has a deep-rooted need for a
safe place. Her getaway in the Cascade Foothills is her secret. But when skeletal remains are

wounds in Eagleโ€™s Nest that cut deeper than they imagined. Especially when a reckless tabloid
reporter draws fresh blood. Itโ€™s clear to Mercy that somebody in this close-knit community is
not who they seem to be.

Some are still shattered by the heist. Some still have reason to be afraid. But which one will kill again and again to hide three decades of secrets? To land this case, itโ€™s up to Mercy to unmask a familiar stranger before someone else dies.
