She leaned across the table and held his gaze. โI heard they found a murdered body not too
far away.โ Her voice was appropriately quiet, but fascination burned in her eyes.
Alarms rang in Ollieโs head.
โDo you know if thatโs true?โ Tabitha asked. โOr are people making stuff up?โ
โItโs true,โ he admitted.
Her eyes widened. โOh! How scary โฆ Did they catch who did it?โ
โIt happened a long time ago,โ Ollie informed her, feeling a little guilty for talking about the
dead. โIt wasnโt really a body โฆ Just a skeleton was left.โ An image of the skullโs bullet hole
flashed in his mind.
โDo they know who it was? Or how long ago it happened?โ She took another bite, her gaze
never leaving his as she hung on every word. Melted soft serve dripped on the table.
โWell โฆ donโt tell anyone, but they think itโs related to a big robbery that happened in Portland
a long time ago.โ
โYouโre not talking about the Gamble-Helmet Heist, are you?โ
Ollie froze. โHowโd you know?โ
โEveryone knows about it.โ She shrugged and looked at her parfait as she scooped up fudge
and peanuts. โIf itโs related to that, then whose skeleton is it?โ
Ellis Mull. Heโd heard Truman and Mercy discussing it yesterday, but something stopped him
from saying it out loud. โDunno.โ
โSurely youโve heard something.โ
Is that what it looks like when someone bats their eyelashes? Ollie abruptly felt as if heโd been
trapped. โNothing.โ He took another bite of his burger and studied the girl through fresh eyes.
โWhat are you doing in Eagleโs Nest?โ
She looked at her ice cream. โWork stuff.โ
โWhat kind of work do you do?โ Now that his brain was functioning, the world appeared
crystal clear, and a murky cloud of suspicion clung to Tabitha.
โI just need to write up something. Say โฆ is there a movie theater around here?โ she asked
with hope in her eyes.
โNo. The closest theater is in Bend. What do you write?โ
Her winning smile had lost some of its warmth. โJust little articles. Like what itโs like to live in a
small town such as this one.โ
โUsually itโs pretty great to live here. Do you have a business card?โ
Now her smile vanished. โWhy?โ
โBecause Iโve hinted several times that I want to know what you do.โ
โWell, I havenโt pressured you to tell me what you do.โ She thrust her chin forward and
stubbornly tilted her head.
โI work in the warehouse for Lake Ski and Sports, and I also detail cars at a dealership in Bend.
Iโm not in school, but I take online courses and plan to start at the community college for
summer session. See? Itโs not hard to be forthright.โ He held her gaze as he took another bite
of burger, thoroughly chewed and then swallowed. โWhy do I feel like youโre playing me? Iโve
got nothing anyone could want.โ Except access to the police chief and an FBI agent.
Tabitha slipped a card out of her purse and pushed it across the table.

The Midnight Voice
โYou write for a tabloid.โ Heโd scanned the headlines in stores as a kid, hungry for information.
Any information.
โI donโt write anything thatโs not true.โ
โI recently saw a headline about the president having seven toes on one foot.โ
โI didnโt write it.โ
โYou have higher standards?โ
โItโs a job. My pieces are factual and well written.โ
โWhy did you target me?โ Does she know I found the body?
She stirred her fudge into the melting ice cream, watching it blend together. โI saw you leave
the house where Agent Kilpatrick spent the night. She doesnโt live there, right?โ
Ollie ignored her question. โYou followed me? After youโd already followed Mercy to the
house?โ Dread crawled up his spine. Mercy and Truman were not going to like these facts.
โI didnโt get any information when I talked to the FBI agent, and I figured the police chief
wouldnโt talk to me either, so I decided on a different approach when I spotted you.โ She was
all business now. The earlier flirtation was completely gone.
โNobody in Eagleโs Nest will give you information for your story.โ
A slow, wide smile answered him. โPeople always talk. Iโll figure out the right way to approach
them.โ
โYouโve struck out twice now.โ
โThen Iโll have to keep swinging, wonโt I? Donโt worry about me.โ She batted the eyelashes
again. โI always come out on top. By tomorrow, that FBI agent will wish sheโd answered my
questions.โ
Ollie set down his last bite of burger, bile burning in his stomach. โAre you threatening
Mercy?โ
Her laugh was forced. โOf course not. I meant sheโll wish sheโd been my source.โ
Ollie took a long look at Tabitha. Under his stare, she blinked several times and tried
unsuccessfully to smile. โThatโs my family youโre talking about,โ he stated quietly.
โI happen to know youโre not related,โ she snapped.
โFamily is more than bloodlines. Itโs also the people you choose to be in your life. I chose
them.โ
โYouโre not making any sense.โ
โAll you need to understand is that if you do something to embarrass Mercy or Truman, youโll
be answering to me.โ
