1--What is the title of your latest release?
TOM CLANCY LINE OF DEMARCATION
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Russia and Narco Terrorists try to pull off another Crimea, snatching a strategic slice of the world as a fait accompli. This time it’s in the Western Hemisphere. Everything is going the villains’ way until Jack Ryan Jr. sniffs it out. Can he marshal the forces to stop it before it’s too late?
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I look at flashpoints around the world. Right now, Venezuela—backed by Russia—is nervous about a major oil/gas discovery in Guyana, a small, American-allied English-speaking country that borders Venezuela. Not long after I began the book, Venezuelan tanks rolled into the disputed region. Just last month, the U.S. Secretary of State visited Guyana with a warning to Venezuela not to interfere in its issues. I saw all of this happening and thought it would make for an interesting setting.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
I would, but I think his energy might outpace mine. He would certainly have some entertaining stories to tell…
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Ambitious, heroic, impulsive.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
This was my first attempt at creating characters within foreign governments. I learned how to make that brief and relevant to the story, while making the characters interesting (I hope).
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
A bit of both. I think it’s good to carry through to the end of a book because that helps work out plot issues. On a second draft you can delete unnecessary things and sprinkle in things that you know will be more important in the third act, for example. If you spend too much time on an early chapter that you later decide wasn’t a good fit for the story, then you’ve wasted quite a bit of time.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Crazy combinations on flatbread pizzas.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I have a loft in our home with a lot of industrial finishes that I really like. It feels to me like a coffee house.
10--Who is an author you admire?
I admire Jack Carr for his ability to expand so rapidly into multiple areas (film, non-fiction, historical fiction).
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Maybe “Tales of the South Pacific” by James Michener. That book made me want to go into the Navy, travel, and most of all, write.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I had submitted my first book, THE HANDLER, to about five agents. I didn’t hear back from any of them. About 7 months went by and the agent at the top of my list, Scott Miller, sent me an email out of nowhere saying he was loving the book. He called two days later. The next week we had a deal with Penguin Random House. It was surreal.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Historical fiction.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
The Right Stuff
15--What is your favorite season?
Autumn
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
With a small group and a lot of good wine
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Right now, I am really enjoying “Your Friends and Neighbors” on Apple TV. Jon Hamm is awesome.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Thai.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I play a couple of musical instruments. I also paint. Most of the time I like to go for walks and just be outside.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
This is a big year for me with three books coming out: LINE OF DEMARCATION, TERMINAL VELOCITY, and RED TIDE.
Jack Ryan, Jr. #13

The discovery of an oil field off the coast of Guyana plunges Jack Ryan, Jr into a cauldron of lies in the latest entry in this New York Times bestselling series.
It starts with the destruction of a US Coast Guard cutter and the loss of her entire crew. But the USCG Claiborne was on an innocuous mission to open a sea lane between an oil field off the coast of South America and the refineries of southern Louisiana. The destruction of the ship, tragic as it is, won't stop that mission from continuing.
So who would sacrifice twenty-two men and women just to slow down the plan? That's the question plaguing Jack Ryan Jr. He's in Guyana to work a deal to get his company, Hendley Associates, in on the ground floor of this new discovery, but Russia’s Wagner Group and a pack of Venezuelan narco-terrorists have other ideas—and will risk war with the United States to see them through. It's up to Jack to identify the killers before they draw a bead on him, but how can he do that when the line of demarcation between friend and foe is constantly shifting?
