Book Title: GOLD COAST DILEMMA
Character Name: Ofosua Addo
How would you describe your family or your childhood?
Chaotic. My childhood was like living in a TED Talk mixed with a Kumawood drama. My mother, Helen, made sure I knew every day that success wasn’t an option—it was the only option. Oh, and if I didn’t become a lawyer, doctor, or engineer? Good luck explaining my existence to her.
What was your greatest talent?
I can multitask like a superhero. I’ll organize a marketing campaign, calm my mom’s wedding-planning mania, and still find time to re-read The Count of Monte Cristo all at once.
Significant other?
I was married to Yofi Tutu for less than twenty-four hours. Emphasis on “was.” Turns out he was more interested in extracurricular activities than keeping his vows. Currently, I am not falling in love with my nemesis co-worker. He’s a total pain in the ass. I can’t stand him. I don’t care how pretty he is.
Biggest challenge in relationships?
Finding a man who doesn’t bring drama. And that my mother didn’t pick. Bonus points if his family doesn’t make me feel like I’m auditioning for a role in Perfect African Daughter-in-Law. Spoiler alert: They always do.
Where do you live?
The West Village. I grew up there. Though I might start calling it Heartbreak Hotel after Yofi’s antics. But it’s cool—I’ll bounce back. Maybe I’ll move somewhere quieter, like Mars.
Do you have any enemies?
Enemies? Oh, honey, exes count, right? Also, too-pretty, devil incarnate co-workers count, too, right?
How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
The West Village is gorgeous, but I’m ready for a break from places where my mother might pop up unexpectedly, armed with passive-aggressive comments. I do love the choice of Ghanaian restaurants available though. Give me kelewele or give me death.
Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
Neither. But if I were to get a pet, it’d be a cat with as much attitude as me. I’d name her Sika.
What do you do for a living?
I’m clawing my way up the ranks at Drake Publishing. One day, I’ll be running the show—mark my words. Until then, I’m dodging nepotism babies and surviving on coffee and my sheer will to survive.
Greatest disappointment?
Realizing that even with all my planning, some things—like cheating husbands—are beyond my control.
Greatest source of joy?
Books, my cousin, Kukua, and watching dating shows with my roommates.
What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
Dancing to Burna Boy, binge-watching dating shows, and challenging myself to create the perfect jollof rice.
What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
I care too much about making other people proud—especially my mom. It’s exhausting, and, honestly, I should start charging her therapy fees.
What keeps you awake at night?
The thought of failure? Am I living up to my potential? Will I ever satisfy my parents? Did I really catch my office nemesis Cole Drake staring at my legs? You know, the usual.
What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Figuring out how to stop my mother from finding me another ‘perfect Ghanaian husband.’
Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?
Peace, honey. I need peace. Also, a way to make my mother proud of me wouldn’t hurt.
Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
Two words: Yofi. Tutu. And fine, my refusal to go and get a master’s degree.

Nana’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she borrowed from her cousin on a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana at a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters. Waiting for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana, meantime works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is. Though, until that ninja job comes through, you’ll find her acting out scenes for hubby and puppy while catching up on her favorite reality television shows in sunny San Diego.
