Jesse Q. Sutanto | Vera Wong is determined to find yet another case to solve

amazongoodreadsbookbubtwitterInstagramfacebook

1--What is the title of your latest release?

VERA WONG’S GUIDE TO SNOOPING (ON A DEAD MAN)

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

High on the success of her first ever murder case, Vera Wong is determined to find yet another case to solve, even if it means harassing a whole new group of people.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Pretty simple, really. I don’t like having to do too much research, so I set it in places I know well. In this case, San Francisco!

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Definitely. I wish she’d adopt me, honestly.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Meddlesome, well-meaning, unstoppable.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Human trafficking is far more prevalent than I thought it was.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I wait until I’m totally done, otherwise I would be stuck editing the first chapter over and over again, ad infinitum.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

A good white cheddar.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I write in the dining room because it’s the sunniest room in the house, and I hiss at anyone who dares talk to me while I write. Which is everyone, because I’m dominating a communal space.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Sir Terry Pratchett. He’s probably the biggest influence on my writing.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn. It literally changed everything I thought I knew about the suspense genre.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

Well, my husband was out of town. My agent called to tell me I have an offer from a publisher, and I shrieked his ear off, then I called my husband while sobbing. He thought something terrible had happened to our kids. So that was probably not a great moment for him.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Psychological suspense.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Interstellar. I’ve watched it multiple times and each time I still discover things I missed.

15--What is your favorite season?

Autumn.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With my girlfriends.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

This is kind of random, but No Bad Parts, by Richard Schwartz. It’s a non-fiction book, not something I read very often, but I found really enlightening and personally very helpful.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Singaporean.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I want to say that I spend it wisely, but honestly these days I just waste time watching Instagram Reels. It’s terrible! I need to stop!

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I have a Mulan retelling coming out with Disney in June, so I am very excited about that!

VERA WONG'S GUIDE TO SNOOPING (ON A DEAD MAN) by Jesse Q. Sutanto

Vera Wong is back and as meddling as ever in this follow-up to the hit Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers.…

Ever since a man was found dead in Vera's teahouse, life has been good. For Vera that is. She’s surrounded by loved ones, her shop is bustling, and best of all, her son, Tilly, has a girlfriend! All thanks to Vera, because Tilly's girlfriend is none other than Officer Selena Gray. The very same Officer Gray that she had harassed while investigating the teahouse murder. Still, Vera wishes more dead bodies would pop up in her shop, but one mustn't be ungrateful, even if one is slightly...bored.

Then Vera comes across a distressed young woman who is obviously in need of her kindly guidance. The young woman is looking for a missing friend. Fortunately, while cat-sitting at Tilly and Selena's, Vera finds a treasure trove: Selena's briefcase. Inside is a file about the death of an enigmatic influencer—who also happens to be the friend that the young woman was looking for.

Online, Xander had it all: a parade of private jets, fabulous parties with socialites, and a burgeoning career as a social media influencer. The only problem is, after his body is fished out of Mission Bay, the police can't seem to actually identify him. Who is Xander Lin? Nobody knows. Every contact is a dead end. Everybody claims not to know him, not even his parents.

Vera is determined to solve Xander's murder. After all, doing so would surely be a big favor to Selena, and there is nothing she wouldn't do for her future daughter-in-law.

Jesse Q. Sutanto

Jesse Q. Sutanto grew up shuttling back and forth between Indonesia, Singapore, and Oxford, and considers all three places her home. She has a Masters from Oxford University, but she has yet to figure out how to say that without sounding obnoxious. When she's not writing, she's gaming with her husband (mostly FPS), or making a mess in the kitchen with her two daughters.
