Louie on the Rocks, February 2025

What happens when a stubborn MAGA father, his progressive bookseller daughter, and the ghost of his centrist wife collide in a battle over family, finances, and grudges? In LOUIE ON THE ROCKS (SparkPress, February 4, 2025), author Meredith O’Brien delivers a darkly comedic exploration of political division, generational conflict, and reluctant caregiving.

We talked with O’Brien to discuss the inspiration behind her novel, the secrets families keep, and what’s coming next.

The Inspiration Behind LOUIE ON THE ROCKS

When asked about the setting for LOUIE ON THE ROCKS, O’Brien explained that she pulled from her own surroundings:
“I wrote what I know, so I rooted the story in central Massachusetts in communities near me.”

But what truly drives the novel is its characters—three very different protagonists:

  • Louie, a retired conservative who refuses to give up control of his life (or his liquor).
  • Lulu, his progressive daughter, who wants to take charge of his finances but is wracked with guilt.
  • Helen, Louie’s deceased wife, who watches over the chaos, full of regret and unfinished business.

While O’Brien admits she’d probably only hang out with Helen in real life, she built the characters to reflect the complexity of family relationships—where love and resentment exist side by side.

Family Secrets and Political Divides

As she wrote LOUIE ON THE ROCKS, O’Brien realized just how much people keep from each other:
“People rarely share their truths and often have no idea what others are really thinking. We hide more than we share. And that’s a shame.”

This theme of hidden emotions plays out in the novel as Louie and Lulu’s personal resentments become tangled with their political beliefs, making reconciliation even more difficult.

The Writing Process

O’Brien has a clear approach to writing and editing:
“I’m of the mind that you can’t do two things simultaneously—or at least, not well. When I write, I just write. When it’s time to edit, I try to put aside the ego of the writer and focus on what’s best for the story.”

Her writing space also reflects a deep connection to storytelling. She writes at a large oak desk that once belonged to her grandfather, surrounded by typewriter prints, book covers, and a framed Good Night, and Good Luck movie poster.

Books That Shaped a Writer

O’Brien’s literary influences are broad, but certain books have stuck with her:

  • FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS by Buzz Bissinger reshaped her understanding of creative nonfiction.
  • THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU by Jonathan Tropper and LITTLE CHILDREN by Tom Perrotta deepened her appreciation for darkly comedic, family-centric fiction.
  • THE HANDMAID’S TALE by Margaret Atwood felt eerily prescient.
  • ON TYRANNY by Timothy Snyder became a vital resource.

Her love for contemporary fiction with a dark comedic edge shines through in LOUIE ON THE ROCKS.

What’s Next for Meredith O’Brien?

Beyond her fiction, O’Brien is an advocate for chronic illness awareness. In 2025, she’s releasing UNCOMFORTABLY NUMB 2, a follow-up to her 2020 memoir, featuring stories and advice from multiple sclerosis patients and advocates.

She’s also working on a nonfiction book about a Millennial Unitarian Universalist minister struggling to lead a small Massachusetts congregation through uncertain times.

With LOUIE ON THE ROCKS available now, readers can expect a sharp, funny, and deeply relatable story that captures the complicated ties of family—fueled by love, politics, and a few too many drinks.

Ready for a novel that blends humor, heartbreak, and family dysfunction? LOUIE ON THE ROCKS arrived on February 4, 2025. Don’t miss it!
