1--What is the title of your latest release?
Fast & Reckless
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Six years ago, Mira made a mistake that forced her exile from the world of Formula One. Now she’s back as her father’s assistant and determined to make up for the past. Will, the talented new driver for her father’s team, flamed out early in his career and is battling his way back to the top. He’s the last man Mira should want, but giving in to their undeniable attraction could spell disaster for both of them.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
Formula One is an international sport, with every race taking place in a different country. It sets the stage all on its own!
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Oh, for sure. She and I would probably be great work friends. We’re both hyper-organized and take everything way too seriously.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Determined, hard-working, and vulnerable
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
Oh, what didn’t I learn? Formula One is a highly technical sport. There is so much that goes into the creation of the cars and the strategy of the races. I would read through pages and pages of information just to craft a single paragraph of a race scene.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I might tweak here and there, but I do my best to draft as quickly as possible, so I can stay in the flow of the story. And in my experience, so much gets cut or rewritten in edits anyway. I’m not going to waste time perfecting a passage that might not even make it into the final draft.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I love really high-quality dark chocolate, the higher the cocoa count, the better.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
Well, I live in New York City, so a separate office just for my writing is a luxury far beyond me! Most of the time, I’m parked at my kitchen table. Our kitchen has windows on two sides and great light. It’s my favorite room in our apartment. And there’s usually a cat in my lap.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Oh, so many. Sherry Thomas writes some of the most painful historical romance angst I’ve ever read, and that is totally a compliment. Kate Claybourne is a master of contemporary romance. She makes it look so effortless. Olivia Dade’s heroes are the absolute best. I fall in love with every one.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Okay, honestly? Twilight. But probably not for the reasons you think. I wasn’t even all that crazy about the book, but somehow I found my way into the fan community and started writing fanfiction…first for Twilight and then for a lot of other things. That turned out to be an incredible writing incubator for me, a safe space to try things out and learn. It sparked the desire to write original fiction, and eventually I did. I don’t think I’d be here today if I hadn’t impulsively picked up that book right before a long flight.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
My agent had just sent the manuscript out a week before, and publishing tends to move at a glacial pace, so I wasn’t expecting to hear anything from anyone for months and months. I was meeting my husband in Manhattan for a drink after work and as soon as I sat down, my phone lit up with a call from my agent. I figured if she was calling me out of the blue after 6 pm, it had to be important. So I took the call out on the sidewalk, trying to set up a time to talk to Zando over the noise of the traffic. It was exciting, and very surreal. I couldn’t believe it was all happening so fast.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Oh, romance, of course. Within romance, I pretty much stick to contemporary and historical. But I also love a good Regency or Victorian classic.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and the two sequels. That trilogy is totally my comfort watch.
15--What is your favorite season?
Fall, for sure. I get to bust out all my favorite cardigans. I own So. Many. Cardigans.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I’m not a big birthday person. At most, I’m happy to have dinner with my husband at our neighborhood pub. That’s all the celebration I need or want.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
We’re kind of obsessed with For All Mankind. Alternate timeline where America lost the space race to land on the moon. It’s hard to describe, but so addictive. Also, The Fall Guy was an absolute delight. The kind of old-school rom com I wish they made more of. Ryan Gosling is gold.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Vietnamese. Summer rolls are my weakness, and I love a good bun with grilled pork. Yum.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I have two demanding day jobs plus a writing career, so free time is pretty scarce. I love traveling, but I don’t get to do as much of it as I’d like.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
Racing Hearts Book Two, Kiss & Collide! It comes out next May and I am super excited about it. I had so much fun writing it.
