1--What is the title of your latest release?
THIS IS WHY WE LIED
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
It’s a locked room mystery set in a secluded resort called McAlpine Lodge where Will Trent and Sara Linton are on their honeymoon. Then - murder.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I knew I wanted to write a locked room mystery, and I thought that a place like the McAlpine lodge could feel really creepy because it is so far removed from the rest of civilization. And it’s the type of place where I could believably have a large dysfunctional family and plenty of suspicious guests. Also, it’s a place that Will has wanted to go since he was a kid, so it is kind of sentimental, too.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Definitely. Will would not mind doing OCD things like mopping the garage floor. He would understand that is a totally normal thing that normal people do.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Perceptive. Strong. Complicated.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
The chef in the book is Puerto Rican, so Ramón Rodriguez (who plays Will Trent on the ABC show) taught me about Puerto Rican food.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
By the time I sit down to write I am pretty clear on how I want to tell the story. So I typically write the story beginning to end, and then after I finish writing I go back and edit.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Cupcakes
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I write in my office in my cabin, in the North Georgia mountains. There is beautiful mountain laurel blooming right outside my window. A lot of people think of big cities like Atlanta when they think of Georgia, but North Georgia is known for its beautiful nature and charming towns.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Flannery O'Connor, because she was a strange woman who lived in a very insular South Georgia community, and she grew up to write dark and twisted stories that provided a model for strange little girls like me. Her work is surprising, hilarious, and at times brutal. Reading her stories as a little girl was exhilarating, and studying her as a college student was a revelation. I learned that a woman could get away with telling stories that weren’t the kind you’d tell in polite company.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
GRIEF IS A THING WITH FEATHERS by Max Porter. I read this after losing my ninth-grade teacher, who was my mentor well into adulthood. It’s hard to describe what the story is about, but it so deftly deals with the absurdity of grief that one need only read the first few pages to understand.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
Believe it or not, that was 25 years ago now. It’s hard to remember, exactly. All I remember is feeling really excited and nervous.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
I really read across all genres. I love nonfiction as much as I love fiction. I believe that in order to be a good writer, you have to be a good reader. So I read as much as I can.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
My favorite movie of all time is called CLAY PIGEONS. It’s very dark and funny and fantastic.
15--What is your favorite season?
Fall
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
A friend of mine bakes me a cakie (it’s part cookie, part cake, look it up) and I try to guilt my cat Dexter into spending quality time together, which never works.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I think FOR ALL MANKIND is one of the best shows on TV right now.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
What type of cuisine is turkey sandwich? Deli style?
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I don’t have a ton of free time, but my perfect day would be: read with my cat on me, and then maybe go on the treadmill for a couple of hours. And obviously there'll be cake involved. And a nap. I love a good nap.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
My next novel is a standalone. It takes place in Georgia. And someone dies.
