What is the title of your latest release?
ALL MONEY AIN’T GOOD MONEY
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Jinx Curry is the kick-ass 70s-like private detective John Shaft in heels.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I was born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio. I purchased my first home in Forest Park, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati at 27. Since 2013, I’ve lived in the Metro-Atlanta area. So, All Money Ain’t Good Money setting is here.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Absolutely. Jinx is fun and witty. As a former soldier, I’d be in a fox hole with her any day. Besides, Jinx carries a Glock. So, I would always feel safe hanging out with her.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Fun, Fearless, Female
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned how to listen while writing dialogue.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
At first, I would edit the book as I drafted it, but I discovered that process detracted from my word count production. So, I wrote two chapters at a time then edited them later.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Lemon Meringue Pie. A moment on the lips is a lifetime on the hips. I try and stay away from it, but it’s hard!
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I’m literally all over the place. My primary area of production is at my kitchen table. Sometimes I wake up at night and work on a scene in my bed. So I drag my laptop into my bed! Often, I write at my sister’s home in her backyard.
10--Who is an author you admire?
There are several. Terry McMillan. Ralph Ellison. Janet Evanovich. James Patterson. Toni Morrison. Jackie Collins.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Roots by Alex Hailey. Although at five years old, I’d written a book, after reading that book, I knew it was possible for me to become an author.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
Okay. Don’t think I’m a weirdo or that I’m into conspiracy theories, but I’m a two-time survivor of sexual harassment and hostile work environments. Both employers have engaged in years-long fact-finding investigations that have not yielded them anything that would nullify my claims. Yet, the investigations proceed—despite my pleadings to my U.S. senators to intervene on my behalf to the EEOC. But I got the “call” when I reached out to two literary agents who were not only enthusiastic but turned me down! One telephoned me and told me not to give up but to let her know how things go with my book. I was puzzled to say the least because she really loved the plot and the characters. The second literary agent loved the novel. She even made helpful suggestions for the ending. I offered to make the suggestions, then I asked if she would sign me if I did; she declined. But there was such hesitancy that I realized that like everything else in my life, my former employers were interfering with my literary career also. They were actually preventing me from being published. If I become a successful novelist of the bestselling variety, they probably fear that I may publish my story about what occurred while working for them. Believe me. It’s a doozy.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
My favorite genre to read is the mystery. I love trying to solve the puzzle.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
There are so many. Shaft. The Godfather. The Untouchables.
15--What is your favorite season?
My favorite season is the fall season because of the weather; it’s not too hot or too cold. I also love it because of college and NFL football! Go Kansas City Chiefs! I’m originally from Ohio, and my family calls me a traitor because I’ve rendered the Cincinnati Bengals my second team. But here is my reason: They were losing for years. Upon Patrick Mahomes’ first starting season as quarterback, I fell in love. I felt, he and the Chiefs would dethrone the New England Patriots and become the beasts of the AFC. I was correct!
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I like to celebrate my birthday quietly. A small red velvet cake and some vanilla ice cream.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I’m a politics junkie, so the podcast Ultra by Rachel Maddow.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
American.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
When I have free time, I try exercising. My sister, Shaunese, has roped me into twice weekly HIIT classes, and they’re murder.
