Book Title: HAUNTED WARRIOR - Ravenscraig Legacy #6

Character Name: Graeme MacGrath

How would you describe your family or your childhood?

Aye, well, that would be a tale for a long, dark winter night, if you’d know the truth. There are also things better left unsaid. Someone you know as the author, wouldn’t appreciate me revealing certain aspects of my past. I can tell you that my family held sway at my ancestral home, Castle Wrath, for nearly as long as time exists. Wrath stood on a high cliff along a wild stretch of Scotland’s North Sea coast and remnants of its walls remain to this day. But I am the last of my line. It’ll have to suffice to know that I am descended from a long line of proud lairds and chieftains, powerful, courageous men who loved the sea with the whole of their hearts and loved their women and children even more. Sadly, we often fought on the wrong side of battles and made our share of enemies. Now, I’d best say no more—beyond adding that, to a MacGrath, little matters more than heritage, tradition, and the sea-washed shores of our home.

What was your greatest talent?

Perseverance. Once your readers see what the author has shown you of my life, you’ll understand why perseverance has been a great boon. I’ll also add my way with animals, especially seals, and, from what I’ve seen of the world—outside my book, anyway—my ability to appreciate a cold, Scottish wind whipping ‘round the eaves, a plate of oatcakes, a cup of ale, and the glow of a peat fire, all that enjoyed with the love of my life, who, despite being born in distant America, loves such simple comforts even more than I do.

Significant other?

Kendra Chase—or I should say, MacGrath, as we married as soon as we could, meaning the instant the ink dried on the author’s last line in our book, Haunted Warrior, which I think should have been titled Blessed Warrior, as Kendra is the greatest blessing of my life. For the curious, we were wed in a small ceremony up at Castle Grath, then celebrated in style at the Pennard Inn, the whole village in attendance.

Biggest challenge in relationships?

Aye, well, again. Answering would give readers something the author despises: spoilers. So I’ll share what I can and say that I’ve been a very busy man for a great many years. Coming from a long line of lairds and chieftains isn’t just about heritage, a proud flash of plaid now and then, a bit of swagger when called for, giving out rounds in the pub, and making appearances at Highland Games or Burns Night Suppers. I’ve had more than my share of challenges, matters that surely served the greater good, but left me little time to even think of romance.

Where do you live?

Pennard, a tiny fishing village on Scotland’s rugged North Sea coast. It’s a spot of great beauty and filled with little more than peace, briny air, and the good souls lucky enough to call the place home. (my wife, Kendra, had a lot to do with the peace, but I’ll let your readers discover her part in the author’s book, Haunted Warrior).

Do you have any enemies?

Not now—and that’s a splendid feeling. I did have a mortal enemy who, for reasons I shall not name, is no longer a threat. His ancestor was Morcant, a dark druid responsible for much grief and horror centuries ago. My foe, who blessedly is no more, served as a reminder that there truly is such a thing as tainted blood. At least, for those unfortunate enough to have a dark druid in their ancestry.

How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or repelled by, in this place?

I love the place I am now. It’s where I’ve always been, and where I intend to stay. Re attachment, I am rather fond of my cottage, the Keel. It’s the last one on the village’s coast road, backed by the cliff and facing the empty sea. It might be small, but hearing nothing but the wind and sea, the settling of peats in the hearth, well, that’s all I ever wanted and need. That, and Kendra at my side. Our dog, Jock.

Nothing in this place repels me, no. Well, that’s not quite true. Now and then, we do see more tourists than I’d like—and when one of them leaves litter behind . . . well, then the ancient warrior in me rises. But you can’t go chasing after tourists in a flapping plaid, sword raised, and shouting rage, can you?

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?

We have our border collie, Jock. He’s the best dog and pretty much an ambassador for the village. Everyone loves him. He’s special, but then, all dogs are. Though . . . Jock might just be a bit more unique than most.

No children—yet. But we’ll be starting a family within the year, I’ll wager.

What do you do for a living?

Well . . . Everyone hereabouts could tell you the same, so I’ll no’ hide the truth—I’m one of those lucky souls who inherited more money than I could spend in a lifetime. In many lifetimes, actually. And as my father, and his before him, taught me, I try to use that blessing to make a difference in the world. I work closely with Aberdeen University’s seal research department, keeping an eye on our local seals and helping run a seal refuge, plus a rescue facility for injured and ailing seabirds. Other things, but all work centered locally. It’s important to preserve heritage and tradition, and to look out for the less fortunate.

Greatest disappointment?

Having to wait so long to meet Kendra.

Greatest source of joy?

Kendra and Jock.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?

Kendra and I enjoy taking my boat, the Sea Wyfe, out around the cliffs to check on my seals. Quite often, a walk along the shore by moonlight. And we’re always up to dinner and a few pints at the Pennard Inn. You see, it really is the simple things for us.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?

Waiting so long to give Kendra security in our relationship. Sure, she lived with me at the Keel for a good while, but my life being what it was at the time, I kept a few things from her, so causing her to doubt my love, that I wanted to marry her and be with her all our days. I thought I was sparing her eventual grief, but perhaps deep inside, I was trying to protect my own heart? Either way, I deeply regret any worries she carried around back then.

What keeps you awake at night?

Nothing bad, if that was your thought. I’ll leave this answer to your imagination.

What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?

Tactfully getting rid of a chap who calls himself the Highland Storyweaver. Wee Hughie MacSporran, by name. He’s a writer, historian, and—believe it or not—also runs a tour company. He’s writing a new book on North Sea fishing villages and their lore. After all the trouble Pennard went through in recent times, we don’t need a spotlight thrown on us. So I’m trying to turn his interest on the many other fishing villages down the road—as far down the road as possible. And without seeming rude as the chap does mean well.

Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?

No. I just need to look into Kendra’s eyes, see so much love there, or see Jock’s delight in our walks along the high moors, and my heart is full. Life is good.

HAUNTED WARRIOR by Sue-Ellen Welfonder

The Ravenscraig Legacy #6

Haunted Warrior

When Danger Rises, Passion Ignites . . .

Kendra Chase earns her living as a ghost whisperer. Her work is often emotionally draining, so she’s been looking forward to a vacation in Edinburgh. But it turns into a working holiday when an assignment sends her to Scotland’s rugged north coast. The tiny fishing village of Pennard is being excavated for a historical restoration project, and the locals aren’t the only ones upset by the plans: Supernatural uprisings have been reported.

No one knows better than Graeme MacGrath that his village is a hotbed for psychic trouble. Bound by a centuries-old legacy, Graeme is the fiercest opponent to the development project. The renovation work has disrupted the protective veil between this world and darker, more ancient ones. And though he doesn’t have time for dallying with a fetching American, desire—and love—flares between them. Soon Graeme will depend on Kendra for more than her paranormal abilities as they work to save Pennard from the brink of unspeakable evil.
