Beth Reekles | A Coming-of-age Story About Female Friendship, and a Romance with a Sexy Spanish Bartender

facebooktwitterInstagram

1--What is the title of your latest release?

BEACH CUTE

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Three girls end up on the same holiday, swapping their problems for some Spanish sun… and an accidental digital detox! It’s coming-of-age story about female friendship, and a romance with a sexy Spanish bartender!

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I love the idea of “the geographic cure” – that people think a change of location will fix something. And, really, is there much that some seaside and sangria wouldn’t fix…?

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Definitely! I love to write flawed characters, but that’s because it makes them feel more human and relateable. And maybe I’m biased because I wrote their jokes, but I think they’re pretty funny, too.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Since I’ve got three protagonists, I’ll go with one word for each! Luna – gentle; Rory – chaotic; Jodie – driven.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Definitely that while you can’t actually run away from your problems, sometimes you need a change of pace or some outside perspective to help tackle them. And that it’s okay to ask for support when you need it!

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit afterwards! For me, editing feels more like hard work, whereas writing a first draft is pure fun – I don’t plot, so it’s a chance for me to learn who my characters are and see what antics they’ll get up to!

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Sushi!

9--Describe your writing space/office!

My office is a converted garage attached to my house – plenty of natural light, over-stuffed bookcases, and a couple of plants next to my computer! (And an ever-present cup of tea!)

10--Who is an author you admire?

Agh, there are so many! Ali Hazelwood is someone whose books I totally adore – and I love how she’s brought fanfiction elements into more “mainstream” books!

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

So many! Is it cheesy of me to say The Kissing Booth – my own book? I wrote it for fun when I was 15, shared it online because why not, and now 13 years later I’m a full-time author with my 14th book coming out this summer… so it definitely was a book that changed my life! But also, B.K. Borison’s Lovelight Farms – that’s a total Roman Empire kind of book.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

For Beach Cute, I’d originally written it as a new adult book with characters who were 23/24, but it didn’t get picked up by a publisher at the time. Luna, Rory and Jodie were really special to me though and I really felt like their story and their journeys were something a lot of people could connect with, so when I got the chance to rewrite it for a YA audience, I was thrilled! This was also my return to writing YA after a bit of a break after The Kissing Booth series had wrapped up, and it was so joyful to come back with these characters!

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Rom-coms for sure!

14--What’s your favorite movie?

The Disney 2015 live-action Cinderella remake. I could write essays on that movie. It makes me believe in true love.

15--What is your favorite season?

Winter. I’m a real Buddy the Elf when it comes to Christmas, and is there anything better than being bundled up in a woolly jumper and scarf with your breath fogging up? Or cozy rainy days indoors with a good book?

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I’ve never actually done much for my birthdays! I love making an effort for friends though – making up party bags and putting up some decorations at dinner and finding the perfect present!

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I’ve had such intense deadlines this year that I have mostly just re-watched some comfort shows and haven’t consumed much new content – except the new season of Love is Blind. The drama in this one just did not stop!

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian

19--What do you do when you have free time?

More writing! I write a lot of fanfiction, and usually have a book I’m working on for “fun” as opposed to for my publishers. I also love crafting projects like knitting and crochet and playing Dungeons & Dragons.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I’ve definitely got lots in the pipeline – including my next YA book, a grumpy/sunshine internship romance called Love & Lattes!
