Book Title: MAFIA STAR
Character Name: Marco Mancinelli
How would you describe your family or your childhood?
My childhood was more normal than most people would expect. Sunday dinners with at Uncle Salvatore and Aunt Sylvia’s, and usually Wednesday dinners rotated. I played wee sports and little league sports with the other syndicate families. We were friends until we each turned eleven. We used to shoot basketballs together, now we shoot bullets at each other.
What was your greatest talent?
The ability to read people. I’ve lived to the ripe old age of 31 because I can tell who’s lying to me and who I can trust. My intuition buzzes when danger is around. Without it, I wouldn’t have lived long enough to meet Beth.
Significant other?
Elizabeth - Beth only to me. I never imagined I would fall for my brother’s new sister-in-law. I never imagined two brothers would fall in love with two sisters. Biggest challenge in relationships?
Where do you live?
Manhattan, but my family is from Queens. A couple generations back, we moved away from Brooklyn and the typical home of the Italian Mafia.
Do you have any enemies?
Of course I do. The Russian bratva, the Colombian Cartel, and the Irish mob. We’re all rivals to run NYC.
How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
I love my penthouse, and it turns out my taste is so similar to Beth’s. We even added similar features to our places. It feels as natural to stay at her place as it feels natural for her to stay at mine.
Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
I don’t have either of those, but I look forward to having both now that I’m with Beth.
What do you do for a living?
A little this and a little that. I’m in international commerce. I work with my family, and we have several businesses.
Greatest disappointment?
Turning 12, receiving my first knife that I still carry everywhere, and realizing I’ll willingly kill guys I played soccer with if it protects my family.
Greatest source of joy?
Spending time with Beth. It was just regular family time before I met her, but now combining both is the reprieve I crave.
What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
I love to watch movies and stay in. As much as I can enjoy travel, I do a lot of it for work. Anything low stress is enjoyable.
What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
I didn’t take time to think about Carmine was going through as we grew apart. My cousin and I were so close when we were super young. But I just thought it was a jerk as we got older. I didn’t realize what was happening with our shared grandfather just because Carmine’s parents were married when he was born.
What keeps you awake at night?
Making sure Beth is safe. Making sure no one can get to her now that she’s entered my world.
What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Right now it’s the Diazes. But check back with me in the morning. It might be the Kutsenkos or O’Rourkes. Depends on who’s stealing from who, and who’s blowing—stuff—up.
Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?
There’s nothing material. I’m a billionaire in my own right, even though I don’t drive anything super flashy, and my penthouse isn’t over the top. What I want is for my family to be safe and happy. We are because we’re loyal. Nothing is more important than family, and in turn nothing comes before the Cosa Nostra.
Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
As long as syndicates exist, none of us will be entirely safe or happy. We all do things we wish we didn’t have to. But it’s our duty to protect one another and our people. All we can do is the best we can do.
The Mancinelli Brotherhood #6
She didn’t plan to say yes.
But neither of us can deny what’s between us.
It’s more than we intended.
It’s more than we imagined.
There’s nothing I won’t do for my piccolina.
I’ll always give her what she needs.
I won’t stop until I can give her everything she wants.
Don’t come near her.
That’s your only warning.
