It’s almost Halloween, the perfect time of year to read magical romances about things that go bump in the night. My suggestions have ghosts, demons, vampires, witches, werewolves, and even Death himself. The heat levels and subgenres vary, so there should be something for everyone.
LIVE AND LET WITCH by E.B. Lorow
If you like YA, check out this fun romance between a teen witch who’s serving time in a magical detention center and accidentally summons a poltergeist in an attempt to get free and a fellow inmate who sees himself as a modern-day Robin Hood.
Their banter and chemistry bubbles as they’re on the run from supernatural bounty hunters.
SERAPHIM’S LAMENT: INFERNUM by Layla J. Omorose
This Dark Urban Fantasy is a devilishly good time. Syrna Reynolds’s nightmarish visions end up coming true when the forces of hell send a demon general out to claim her. If you like a little horror with your romance, you’ll love Silver Nitrate, a spooky tale of two bisexual disasters who accidentally curse themselves and set off the resurrection of a Nazi occultist. The scares are chilling, but the chemistry and banter between eccentric sound editor Montserrat and himbo has-been soap star Tristán is adorable and makes them a couple to root for.
BEWITCHING THE VAMPIRE by Brooklyn Ann
Yes, it’s a self-rec, but I promise I deliver all the fun Halloween vibes in this urban fantasy enemies-to-lovers romance between the Lord Vampire of New Orleans and the head of a local witch coven. Raina’s magical attempts to rebuff Valentin quickly morph into a sensual dance as he lures her deeper into his world and they must ally against a common enemy. And even though it’s book 9 in the Brides of Prophecy series, it can be read as a standalone.
HALLOWEEN WEREWOLF by Kestra Pingree
For fans of LGBTQ+ romance, check out this steamy M/M second chance romance between a man and the werewolf who stole his heart. Best of all, it’s Halloween themed!
DOUBLE BREASTED by Evie Mitchell
Another LGBTQ+ read for those of you who prefer contemporary romance, is Double Breasted by Evie Mitchell. This one has all the cozy small-town vibes as an aspiring chicken farmer falls for a hot firefighter during the Halloween season.
UNREVELATIONS by Rissa Watkins
This is probably the funniest, most light-hearted apocalypse novel ever. The end times are coming, and Sara is the only one who may be able to stop Death from unleashing it. Because he has a crush on her. Throw in some witty banter with the cute cop hero, some werewolves and zombies, and you have the perfect spooky read.
TWILIGHT PHANTASIES – Maggie Shayne
The first book in my favorite vampire romance series, Wings in the Night, Twilight Phantasies gives a unique spin on the vampire mythos and fated mates. The angst delivers as the heroine has to take sides between her guardian who’s a vampire hunter and the vampire who steals her heart. And the steam will warm you on a chilly autumn night
THE CUPCAKE COVEN by Ashlyn Chase
A cute, witchy romance between a bakery owner whose love spell went wrong and a sexy cowboy looking for his missing sister. Lots of laugh out loud moments and a few steamy scenes. So much fun!
