1--What is the title of your latest release?
EVERYTHING SHE FEARED
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
When a teen falls while taking a selfie at the edge of a cliff, the last thing she sees before plummeting to her death is Katie Harmon, the nine-year-old girl she was babysitting, looking down at her.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I was looking for a place that had great wilderness setting not far from a metropolis. I had been to Seattle, which is a beautiful city, and the area around it is stunning. So, I thought that would be a good place to set the story.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Yes. I think Sara Harmon be a good friend. Despite her troubling life history, she is down to earth.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Honest. Loving. Haunted.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
How you can draw a character, make them real by using documents, records, transcripts. Back when I was a reporter, we learned to mine a story by going through documents. I used this technique in writing Everything She Feared.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I edit as I go. I’ll even edit the finished book.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Cashews, peanuts, nachos and tacos. Also, club sandwiches from greasy spoons.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
At first glance, a cluttered mess but in reality, organized chaos.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Thomas Harris, Stephen Crane, Fyodor Dostoevsky
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
The Cat in the Hat. I loved having that story read to me as a child. It sparked the connection, and realization that books come to life in our imagination.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
This is my 31st book. But when I found out my first book was going to be published, it happened like this: I was working as a reporter when my wife called me in the newsroom. I knew right off by the tone of her voice, something exciting had happened. She said we just received a fax at home from my literary agent in New York, to say we had an offer on my first book and to call her ASAP. When I called, I said to my agent: “Before you tell me anything, can I buy a new car, or can I get my brakes fixed?” She said: “You can get your brakes fixed.” I was on cloud nine from that moment on. I was going to be a published author, and I got my brakes fixed.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
I read everything.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
A couple. Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It’s just beautiful storytelling with great characters. Also, The Exorcist. It’s a compelling and frightening supernatural detective thriller.
15--What is your favorite season?
Summer. It’s a wonderful time of the year.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Low key. I’ll enjoy my wife’s homemade apple pie, with ice cream.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
The Last of Us and Zodiac
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I like Mexican food, Italian food, Chinese food. I am also partial to standard fare from dives and diners (must be from my reporter days)
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I might watch old movies, but writing is in my DNA. It’s a 24/7 commitment. When I’m not writing, I’m thinking about writing.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
Another thrill ride. I hope to take readers hostage again.
A Suspense Novel
When a teen falls while taking a selfie at the edge of a cliff, the last thing she sees before plummeting to her death is Katie Harmon, the nine-year-old girl she was babysitting, looking down at her.
Investigators gather at the scene, and Katie’s mother, Sara, rushes to comfort her daughter. Yet there’s a small, secret ping of alarm in Sara’s heart that she cannot share—though rookie detective Kim Pierce senses it.
For years, others have tried to unravel this secret. From true-crime podcasters to a haunted journalist searching for a killer who vanished after being released from prison several years ago. And now, with detectives tightening the focus of their investigation, Sara is consumed by her darkest fear—that the babysitter’s death was not an accident.
