Christina Elle | My Top 5 LOL Movies

I grew up in a house where we laughed a lot. We often poked fun at one another, called each other out for stupid things we did, and never let anyone live down one bad mistake.

As a result, I find myself drawn to novels and movies that have a large amount of humor and wit in them. Donít get me wrong, I can appreciate deep, heartfelt storylines, but Iíve learned that I have to be in the mood for a good cry. And the older I get, the less I enjoy putting myself through the emotional roller coaster. Wow. That made me sound like an old maid. I guess what I mean is that it takes me DAYS to recover from a novel or movie where Iíve balled my eyes out all night. Instead, if Iíve laughed through most of it, no recovery is needed and I move onto the next enjoyment.

Thatís important. I feel like life is serious enough. We deal with so many stressors every day that we need an escape from it all.

These are my top 5 laugh-out-loud movies that no matter what kind of mood Iím in, they are my go-to in order to turn my mood around.

  1. Whatís Your Number Ė (The novel is titled 20 Times A Lady) Ė What an adorable story. Such a funny premise about a woman (played by Anna Faris) who decides that after twenty partners, she should have found true love. So she goes back and tracks down all her past lovers to try to give them another look. You canít help but love the main character for all her bumbling mistakes. Sheís so endearing. And Chris Evans. Ladies, let me repeat thatóChris Evans. He spends most of the movie nearly naked and is so freaking cute and funny. Never fails to make me laugh out loud, no matter how many times Iíve seen it.
  2. Bad Boys Ė This one isnít a romantic comedy. Instead it deals with drugs and crime, and the Miami cops trying to stop it. But there are some freaking FUNNY one-liners in this movie. Without fail, if this movie shows up on my TV guide, Iím flipping it on. Itís raunchy and foul humor, and you really only get the full effect on a channel that doesnít bleep out the bad words, but it easily goes down as one of my favs. Martin Lawrenceís character is just crazy enough that he walks that fine line between hysterical and loony. This movie was actually what helped me to shape the storyline for my debut novel, ON HER SIX. I even give a nod to Club Hell (a club in this movie) in my novel.
  3. Liar, Liar Ė Iím not a big Jim Carrey fan. I saw Ace Ventura and many of his other work, and none of it makes me laugh the way that this movie does. This one is smart funny, where I felt like a lot of his other work was silly funny. Itís about a lawyer whoís very successful because he liesÖall the time. His son makes a wish that his dad canít lie for an entire day. And it comes true. So the lawyer spends the entire movie not being able to lie his way through anything. His honesty in telling people what heís really been thinking is HILARIOUS. The one-liners in this movie are CLASSIC. My family and I still quote lines from this movie on a regular basis.
  4. National Lampoonís Christmas Vacation Ė This goes for all the original National Lampoons. I grew up on old Chevy Chase movies. My dad used to laugh like a fool watching Clark Griswold deal with such unfortunate circumstances. Man, the things that guy went through. And he is such a sweetheart, you canít help but feel so bad for him. Those are the types of stories I LOVE.
  5. How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days Ė Another one thatís like a train wreck. You canít help but watch. So entertaining watching how much crap the characters are going to put each other through, and yet you smile the entire time youíre watching it. Such amazing conflict in this story that itís just laughter non-stop. Princess Sophia. Thatís all Iím going to say. So, so funny.

First Rule of Stakeouts: Don't Fall In Love

So when the dangerous but sexy stranger seems to be involved in something illegalóthe aspiring cop in her takes action. If only she could stop thinking about how he looks naked...

"Laughter is the best medicine." Laughter has gotten me through some very tough times. "Liar, Lair" is one of my go to movies, too.
