I’m one of those people who listen to music to get in the right headspace for writing a book. MR. NICE SPY was no exception. I had a whole playlist of songs that reminded me of characters and situations to evoke the right feeling, and here are just a few from that list.
I Am by CRMNL
I don’t think CRMNL is an especially well-known group, but if you ever need an anthem for doing what it takes to get the job done, this song is for you. MR. NICE SPY starts off with Andee and Chan being kidnapped by an international weapons dealer (who just so happens to be Andee’s father), and she learns throughout the book that she has what it takes to take him down.
Till the Sun Burns Out by (SEBELL)
This song is all about loving someone until the sun burns out, and if you were to approach this book from Chan’s perspective, you can see how he always puts Andee first and helps her overcome her worries whenever things get too dark in the catacombs where they’re imprisoned. He comes back for Andee even when things look grim and puts her life above his own.
Ember by Katherine McNamara
As a pyrotechnic engineer (aka, a fireworks designer), Andee relates a lot to blowing things up or setting fires. Both in her personal life, and in the events that take place during the book. Her life may be a mess, but she’s going to use it to her advantage to take down her father’s empire.
I Didn’t Ask For This by Beth Crowley
Let’s be honest, no one really asks to have a criminal for a father. But Andee has to overcome her roots to see who she really is. At times she questions herself, but in the end, she’s stronger because of everything she’s put through. Father included.
Run Tonight by Kat Meoz
Not only do Andee and Chan have to physically run from Holt at one point in the book, but they also have to decide whether to run from their feelings or run with it. Ultimately, they take the leap, like this song implies.
When a pyrotechnic engineer discovers her biological father is an international criminal, she must work with a sexy CIA agent to take him down in this thrilling adventure rom-com.
Andee Paxton knows she’s good at her job as a fireworks designer. What she doesn’t know is that her biological father is Holt, a dangerous arms dealer who has escaped prison. And now he’s searching for his long-lost daughter-dearest.
After the CIA surprises her with this news, they drop another bombshell: they want to use Andee as bait to capture Holt once and for all. But before the CIA can even attempt to spring their trap, she’s kidnapped along with the very hot Officer Adam Chan—all because they were too busy flirting to worry about silly things like “safety protocol.”
A fake relationship—for their protection, of course—and just a few explosions bring Andee and Chan closer, but there’s more than their growing connection at stake. If Holt’s plan succeeds, the world will be brought to its knees. Andee and Chan must rely on each other to stop him…or else everything (including their feelings for each other) might just blow up in their faces.
