Book Title: Mors Obliviscens
Character Name: Flit
How would you describe your family or your childhood?
I don’t remember anything specific since I…died. I can almost picture their faces, I can see certain rooms in my house, things like that, but it’s like there’s a curtain between me and those memories and I can’t quite pull it back to see more clearly.
What was your greatest talent?
Currently, it’s talking to the people Grim is sending to the afterlife. He’s not the most extroverted person in the world, so having me there seems to help make things less awkward and scary.
Significant other?
I don’t think I ever dated anyone while I was alive. My parents may not have allowed it, since I’m only 15.
Biggest challenge in relationships?
It’s kinda hard to trust anyone when you can’t trust your own memories. It’s not that I don’t want to, but there’s a little voice in the back of my mind that’s constantly trying to warn me not to get too close.
Where do you live?
I’m haunting a cabin beside a beautiful lake in the mountains somewhere. Nobody’s been here in a long time, from what we can tell, and there’s nobody else around for miles but the animals in the forest.
Do you have any enemies?
Demons apparently, and angels. Grim says not to trust anyone but him and the other reapers, but I haven’t met any other supernatural beings yet.
How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
It seems familiar somehow, but I don’t understand why. It’s definitely peaceful out here though.
Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
Definitely no kids. No ghost animals here either.
What do you do for a living?
I don’t remember having a job in life, but I love animals, so maybe I was planning to go to college for that? Or I could’ve volunteered somewhere near my house during the summer or school breaks.
Greatest disappointment?
Losing my life and identity
Greatest source of joy?
Wandering in the woods with Grim and meeting other souls while he’s working.
What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
Explore the cabin and the lake when we’re not busy. I journal a bit too and collect things to decorate the living room shelf.
What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
Not being able to save myself the night I drowned.
What keeps you awake at night?
Ghosts don’t have to sleep. We can, but it’s not necessary.
What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Regaining my memory before I cross over.
Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?
We don’t really have a plan to get my memories back, it just has to happen on its own.
Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
Not only can I not control when the memories come back, but I also have to worry about being stolen by other supernatural creatures that want to use my soul for its power. Can’t exactly reminisce when you’re busy being paranoid that every strange noise and weird shadow is going to snatch you away.
What happens after death?
Flit has no idea who she is. She doesn't remember her name, how she got here, or where "here" is. When she encounters the Grim Reaper who tells her that she has died and is now in Purgatory-unlike other souls who pass on to Heaven or Hell-her only real option is to leave with him. He gives her a name and takes her with him to an abandoned cabin, where she tries to recover her memories. As she helps him retrieve the souls of the dead, she starts to wonder what really happened to her: Was she supposed to die? What happened to her family? Did someone kill her?
As they reap more passing souls and face new creatures, she has more questions than answers. There is a war brewing, and Flit finds herself caught in the threads of a battle between angels and demons, descending into the depths of Hell to save someone she thought was a myth. Will she help the angels and prevail? Or will she learn that the secrets of death are darker than she could've imagined?
