Book 2 of the Succubus Diaries (SUCCUBI LIKE IT HOT)
launches on Tuesday the 19th, and instead of letting my succubi prowl around
their hometown for the next adventure, I sent them on a road trip. Someone asked
me the other day, why a road trip? And that made me think for a minute,
because...why not a road trip?
After all, where else do you have the potential for a fun vacation to go
horribly, horribly wrong?
There are so many factors in a road trip that are out of your control that it
makes the tamest road trip sound exciting. Back when I was in college, my
friends and I loved nothing more than to get in the car and take off for a few
days. Some of the craziest memories I have are from those days.
There's the drive itself - I have seen everything from a Klan rally on the side
of the road (we didn't stop) to a castle in West Texas. I've ridden in the back
of a hatchback for 12 hours, and I've ruined someone's truck brakes by keeping
my foot on the pedal while going down the side of the mountain. Oops.
There's seedy roadside motels to think about - one time we stayed in one that
seemed run down, but clean. At least, it seemed clean until you laid back on the
bed and looked at the ceiling...which was covered in black mold.
(We left quickly after that.)
There's campground tales! There was the time that we went camping with a bunch
of friends (like 50 of them) in the woods, only to have a flash flood come
through and wash out the campsite. We had to slog through a mile of knee-high
mud to get to the Red Cross, who were waiting to evacuate us. They had no idea
of where to put 50 waterlogged college kids who had no money on them (my purse
was in the trunk of my friend's car, which was stuck in mud back at the
campsite) so we ended up staying in a hotel that was currently closed to
renovations. None of the rooms had running water or even a door. It
was...interesting. Took us 3 days to get the car back.
Given my own experiences - which are not even all that wild - it seemed natural
to write about all the things that could go wrong on a road trip. And while
Jackie and her friend Remy are not rescued by the Red Cross, they do run into
all kinds of trouble - supernatural and otherwise - on their journey to New Orleans.
It wouldn't be a road trip without some sort of memorable trouble, after all.

My husband ended up in the hospital in Ely, Nevada during our road trip - congestive heart failure. He is like the Energizer Bunny - still going strong!

Road trips can be fun, especially with interesting companions; but, as you say, they can include some unexpected adventures. I love to travel.

Camping on a roadtrip to West Virginia and shooting the rapids of the Yogiheny River was one I'll never forget during my college years.

ah yes - memories of pitching the tent in a "nice little hollow", only to wake up in the middle of a thunderstorm with the tent "afloat" in the rain..

My husband & two friends arrived very late to a camp ground in Estes Park CO on s Labor Day weekend. At the time it was the highest place we could camp. We pitched our tent in the dark by lantern light so as not to disturb our fellow campers. Boy was it cold. We ended up zipping two sleeping bags together & using the other two bags under & over us. We girls were fairly warm, but our husbands both on the out side about froze! Waking up in the morning we found out why. It had snowed about two feet! And, we about fainted when we saw where we were camped..on the very edge of a cliff! a few more feet & we would have been part of the scenery way, way down!! We ended up breaking camp & renting a cabin vacated by fellow tourists that thought the snow was a little too much. Ah, yes memories!!
