Spring Break...Catch the Fever

Spring Fling Flop

I was 17 and a Junior in High School. I admit I was a little geeky as I loved school and also played the violin. Two strikes against me. It was a week before the junior prom and a popular boy who has the most wonderful smile actually asked me to the prom! I was in heaven. I worked part time as a car hop at the A&W (boy, this really dates me!) and at .50 cents a hour plus tips, it took a long time to save money. I had some saved though, and my best friend and I went shopping for a prom dress. I then made an appointment and had my hair done. I felt like a princess.

I will never forget sitting downstairs with my mom and dad watching the clock, while my excitement grew. That is until it became later and later. Finally, two hours later I knew I had been stood up. What was worse was the look of pity my parents gave me. I went upstairs and cried all night, feeling like the ugliest person in the world. I went to school the next day and avoided everyone but my best friend. I had told her what happened and she just kept telling me I was too good for him.

After school we went to work and she told the assistant manager what had happened to me. The assistant manager was a Sophomore in college who was working there to help put himself through college. On a break he told me that the boy who stood me up was an idiot if he did not realize how great I was. I looked up at him and noticed that he did not have a perfect smile, but had a cute little lopsided smile and the kindest blue eyes in the world. Two years later we were married and today we have been married for over 35 years. He makes me feel like a princess everyday of my life and the boy who dumped me? Definitely a frog in disguise of a person!
