Hey ya’ll! Sara Wolf here!

I’m super psyched to write this for Fresh Fiction, mostly because they’re a. Awesome and b. It means FIND ME THEIR BONES is almost released to the world at large! Mostly, I wanted to talk about a super serious topic today.

I think the question I get most - no matter where I go in the world - is ‘how do you write a book?’, followed quickly by ‘I could never write one’. It’s maybe the hardest question to answer, because I’m not entirely sure how I write a book, either. This might out me as a complete pantser (which isn’t bad!) but it also outs me as the sort of writer who doesn’t really think things through. I always tell people who ask this question ‘I write books because I have to’, and that’s true! When I was thirteen, I came to the horrible screeching revelation that magic wasn’t actually real. The sort of magic you see in books, that always sweeps some unsuspecting down-on-their-luck teenager away to another world. I realized that would never happen to me, and that I’d always been waiting for that to happen to me, and so I launched fervidly into writing books.

After all, if the magic was never going to happen to me, I had to make it happen to someone.

I have to write books, in the same way people have to have time to relax, time to recharge. In the same way people have to follow their dreams, no matter how small or big that dream is. I have to write books because if I don’t, life will become so terribly dreary. So dull and usual. It’s not how I escape - it’s how I become. How I learn, and touch the world, like another sense, almost. Touch, sight, write. It took me a long time to realize there is magic in the world - everyday magic like a sunset, or a bird chirping - but there can be so much more. There has to be more, for those other thirteen-year-olds still growing, still struggling. I don’t want them to feel like they’re alone. I don’t want the me from all those years ago to stay sad forever. I want her to realize there is magic, and it’s in books. It’s in the minds of all of us.

So, please. If you’re one of those people who say ‘I could never write a book’, please don’t sell yourself short. Please understand that you can, and that if you want to, you will. Please know that making magic belongs to us, the wordsmiths and the artists, the dreamers and the doodlers. Magic is as real as we make it, and every single day we can make it. Your own mind is magic, and every mind is unique, which means every person who writes is different, and they make their own version of magic real. We all contribute, one by one, each of us creating a different spell to add to the spellbook.

Go forth, unafraid and make your magic. Someone out there needs it.

Bring Me Their Hearts #2

Find Me Their Bones

No one can save her.

In order to protect Prince Lucien d’Malvane’s heart, Zera had to betray him. Now, he hates the sight of her. Trapped in Cavanos as a prisoner of the king, she awaits the inevitable moment her witch severs their magical connection and finally ends her life.

But fate isn't ready to give her up just yet.

With freedom coming from the most unlikely of sources, Zera is given a second chance at life as a Heartless. But it comes with a terrible price. As the king mobilizes his army to march against the witches, Zera must tame an elusive and deadly valkerax trapped in the tunnels underneath the city if she wants to regain her humanity.

Winning over a bloodthirsty valkerax? Hard. Winning back her friends before war breaks out? A little harder.

But a Heartless winning back Prince Lucien’s heart?

The hardest thing she’s ever done.

About Sara Wolf

Sara Wolf

Sara Wolf is a twenty-something author who adores baking, screaming at her cats, and screaming at herself while she types hilarious things. When she was a kid, she was too busy eating dirt to write her first terrible book. Twenty years later, she picked up a keyboard and started mashing her fists on it and created the monster known as the Lovely Vicious series. She lives in San Diego with two cats, a crippling-yet-refreshing sense of self-doubt, and not enough fruit tarts ever.
